September 9, 2017: WWYD

It was months ago…  got some free Cubs tickets.  They were bleacher seats, against the BrewCrew, in mid-September, and they were FREE!!!  Heck yes; that’s awesome.  Then about a week ago I realized; that’s Bears week 1… oh shit.  WWYD?

I’m not in this predicament many times, I mean, getting free tickets and going to a game while I’m missing another big game.  The first time this happened I was 9 years old…  It was a Sox game this time, and you never pass up free tickets!!!  Again, in September, on a Thursday night, against the California Angels.  It just so happened the Bears were scheduled to play in the Metrodome on that day; the year was 1985.  Don’t think I need to remind any die hard fan what happened that evening.  At least the Sox kept showing the highlights up on the big screen, as we all went wild.

There was another time that just came to mind.. the tickets weren’t free, and I wasn’t missing a Chicago game, but it was a Monster Truck thing at the UIC Pavilion.  It was awesome.  We were missing a fight that was on though.  No big deal; Tyson will just knock another buster out.  This time it literally was a Buster… Douglas that is, and when they announced over the PA in the Pavilion that Tyson had lost, I was just shocked.  I wasn’t a big boxing fan so to speak, but Tyson was the man; he was the dominant boxer in our generation.  Who didn’t like the great knockout artist?  And he lost to who???  Shocker!

There have been other things that have come up during Bears games over the years, as well as, other important Chicago games.  Like the 1991 NBA Finals Game 1… I think it was a graduation party; we were all crammed into this little room watching the game.  I did see most of it.  Or how about last year NLDS Game 1?  I was at a wedding reception with no WIFI, no TVs, no nothing.  I had a great time, but it was killing me missing the game.  Texts started to come through sporadically…. I waited forever for the last “W” one to come through…  Yes!

But week 1????  Geez.  I would normally be planted in front of the TV with my Bears jersey on, have my son with his jersey on, ready to roll… ready to try to keep my language PG for my boy.  But no… not this season opener.  I would be headed to Wrigley to watch the Cubbies against the Brewers.  I’m sure I’ll watch the first part of the Bears game, and keep tabs on it throughout….

When the Cubs sucked, for many of my years, I wouldn’t flip to the Cubs game on Bears Sunday.  Now, it’s a split decision.  I flip back and forth to each.  With the NFL being only 16 games, each and every Bears game is important.  However, at this time of year, the Cubs games have much more meaning.  It’s a tough call that I will be navigating through the next month… hopefully 2 months.

WWYD?  Easy call for me.  Head to Wrigley; any chance to go there is not to be wasted.  Keep tabs on the Bears and hope for the best.  Well, at least I hoped for the best…

Tough call but have to go to a game in person if you have tickets. Missing the opening NFL season, game 1, for the Bears would be harder if it were coming off of a championship season or one that we thought might end there. This, on the other hand, is not going to be that. Tickets to the Cubs at Wrigley, too? Yeah, probably not gonna pass those up. We’ve already went over a day game at Wrigley, and how sWeet it is to be there in person, especially now. So Bear Down while at Wrigley but GO CUBS GO!!!
