Remember the cartoon with Sylvester and Tweety Bird? And Sylvester would try to eat Tweety, and he had him in his mouth, and he barely escaped, and all that Sylvester was left with was feathers… That’s kind of how I feel about the Cubs Cards series this week.
We had them dead to rights. The Cubs kicked the crap out them on Monday, and did the same Tuesday… except for one inning where the Cards put up 5. Well, it was the same type of thing Wednesday, but it cost the Cubs the sweep. This time it was the 8th inning, and it was enough for the Cards to pull out the last game of the series.
I’m still happy, don’t get me wrong, but I was getting greedy. I wanted to sweep those bastards, and pull within 5.5… every game counts if we had any intention of catching them. Now, at 7.5, it still seems out of range… heck, even at 5.5 it was still a long shot.
I’ll take the series win and be happy. The 2nd wild card appears to be locked in at a minimum, while with 7 games (I think) against the Bucs, we could snatch the 1st wild card and play that game at Wrigley. Either way, 163 appears imminent.

And that’s OK. Of course you’d much rather win the division… something that should be and actually realistically will be the Cubs goal for the foreseeable future. Who the heck thought we’d win the division this year anyways? Anthony Rizzo did, and I like that in him, but most of us, OK, I thought .500 or slightly over would be a great year. We will exceed that.
But since we are exceeding that, and since all indications are that we will return to the playoffs for the first time in 7 years, we should get greedy. Let’s ride this thing as long as we can. The thing is, the Pirates are a really good team too. However, I like our starting pitching over their starting pitching…. our ace over their ace. Honestly, at this point, I’ll take Jake against anybody and roll the dice. All indications are it will be Gerritt Cole vs Jake Arrieta in 163; I can’t complain about that.
Actually, I’d be more worried against Francisco Liriano. My memory tells me that he seems to always pitch well against us… or maybe that was the Sox when he was in Minnesota, anyways.. I like our chances against Cole. If we hit like we have been lately, I like our chances period. Although, we still do have that game or games where our offense is quiet. We have flexed our muscle lately, but it’s still not 100%. So if Cole shuts us down, I STILL like our chances, because I expect our ace to do the same. Then it will lead into the bullpen, where the Pirates are strong… and we are too, but we’ve had our hiccups. I could easily see a 1 run game, and that would be OK too. The Cubs have played in and won the most 1 run games in baseball; good experience leading into the postseason. But it is a different season…
It’s fun just to be talking about this. Question on ESPN chicago read, what are you more excited about, Cubs postseason or Bears regular season… easy call. Of course we’ll be tuning into each and every Bears game, but I’ll trade losses there all day for the Cubs continued success. The Cards may have gotten away this time, but I have a feeling we’ll meet again. This time, I will want more than just their feathers…
