September 8, 2016: Too Soon

posted in: Bears | 1

NFL season is upon us.  Everybody can’t wait until football begins.  With the fantasy leagues, office pools, escape from crappy baseball seasons, and just overall love for football, NFL season is highly anticipated.  I’m not feeling it this year.  Is it possible that the start of the season is too soon?

I had my fantasy draft.  I wasn’t prepared, but I think I did OK.  Let me run down my team (Don’t worry, I will not be bringing back a fantasy football feature to this blog.  You’ll just have to put up with a couple sentences here and there).  Carson Palmer & Blake Bortles at QB.  Murray from OAK, Hyde from SF, and Langford are my RBs; West from KC is on my bench.  Hopkins from HOU, Benjamin from CAR, and Watkins from BUF are my starting wide outs, while Steve Smith, Rishard Matthews, and Josh Gordon are on the bench. Jenkins and Cameron are the TEs, while Janikowski is at K, and Arizona at D.  Like I said, I’m pretty happy with it, but… the fantasy baseball playoffs are going on.  So, my focus is still on baseball there.

Same as it is in real baseball with the Cubs.  The success of the Cubs this year coupled with the promise of the holy grail has my full attention.  That will be the case until the happy or bitter end.  Sorry Bears.

Still, I will definitely watch every game.  I’ll have the Bear jersey rotation ready to go.  We will be there on Sundays… just not so sure how much I’ll be able to dig into other than that… for now.

Everybody is so crazy for football… even college football.  I heard this first weekend of college football was outstanding; I didn’t watch one snap.  Tonight is the first game in the NFL; I may not watch that.  Oh wait, Cubs don’t play tonight, so I may take a peek, but will more easily give in to my son’s TV choice, you know what I mean?  It’s not that urgent, critical for me to watch every NFL game and any college football game.  For Da Bears it’s a different story… I won’t miss a game, or I will try my very best not to.  With only 16 games, you can’t miss any.. not like hockey, bball, or baseball.  We’ve been over this.  I’m just not that goo goo ga ga crazy over football like I used to be.

Maybe it’s because I’ve stopped gambling on it.  Maybe because the Bears have sucked lately.  Maybe because of the teams that have been good.  Maybe it’s because the Cubs are better.  I’m sure I’ll get into the swing of things eventually, post-baseball, but for now… it just seems too soon.

That being said… I’m am curious to see how the Bears will fare this year.  Of course, I always keep a positive outlook, and think the Bears will do decent, and I don’t agree with the media at this point.. but, the proof will be in the pudding.  So, grab your spoons… we’re about to dig in now.

Cubs in the playoffs with a chance to win it all erases all excitement about the possibility of the Bears being good. That, coupled with no longer betting on the nfl, leads to the Bears taking a back seat. Yes, all games will be watched, but the excitement level is just not there…yet, at least. College football has been and usually is pretty damn good. Glad to catch some games and highlights of both cfb and nfl games. Hope the Bears start fast and the Cubs finish strong!
    BEAR DOWN!!!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
