September 6, 2017: Clutch Vila

posted in: Cubs | 1

That was a really nice win for the Cubs on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.  Nice to end the 3 game losing streak.  Nice to see Quintana pitch well.  Nice to see some clutch hitting by Mr. Clutch Vila; Alex Avila has been a great pickup.

Who would have thought, that HE would be the most important part of the trade with the Tigers.  Justin Wilson was supposed to be the man coming out of the bullpen; hopefully he can still be that man, but up until now, nah.  But Avila on the other hand… it was almost like Theo could predict the future.  Willson goes down, and oh yeah, here you go, we have a more than capable veteran catcher in Alex Avila to plug in.  No disrespect to Miggy, but he’s better than him.  He’s been huge since Contreras has been out.

I think I read somewhere that he is batting over 400 with RISP.  He had another big hit last night, tripling down the right field line to give the Cubs the only run they needed on this night.  Alex also seems like a pretty cool dude.  Heard some interviews with him, and he’s a straight shooter.  Can’t see him being on the Cubs more than this year, but this year ain’t over yet…

Still waiting for Wade Davis to blow a save… not really, but I’d rather him end the perfect streak now than in October; oops, I said I wasn’t going to talk about postseason yet.  I’d rather him stay perfect period.  Another guy who probably will not be here past this year, Wade has been huge.  Without him, without Avila, we may not be enjoying a 4 game lead at this point.

And all that talk about the Cubs having a bad hangover year.  Something else I read… the Cubs are having the best year AFTER a World Series victory since like 2010… something like that.  They are in first place by the way.  The demise of the Cubs has been greatly over exaggerated.

Then there was Baez with another heads up play out there… throwing to 3rd to start a 6-5-4 double play.  You don’t see those every day.  Getting the two lead runners at 3rd and 2nd base in one swoop; that helped Q preserve his perfect outing.

And another thing…. I don’t know about you, but I am NOT worried about Quintana.  Unlike Avila and Davis, he IS a guy that will be here for a while.  So not only am I not worried about him this year, and in the postseason (if we make it), but I think he will continue to show and prove for the next couple years in Wrigley.  Yeah, he caught that 1st inning virus that all the Cubs starters had in the first half of the season, but he’ll be fine…

Tough luck loser Gerrit Cole went 8 scoreless, and lost to the Cubs 1-0 for the second time this year.  That’s OK though; he still brought me many fantasy points on this night, as I surged ahead in my matchup.  Nice to see Rondon and Strop work some clean innings too by the way…

The Brewers just dropped 4.5 games out, 0.5 games behind the Cardinals, before they come to Wrigley for a historic night.  The first EVER Friday night Cubs game in Wrigley.  I knew they didn’t play Friday or Saturday night games at Wrigley, although I think there have been a couple Saturday ones, but the first Friday night game ever!?!?  Wow.

So tune in for history come Friday night, but first tune in to see the Cubs try to split the series in Pittsburgh.  I will be.  And continue to watch Baez make amazing plays, Davis stay perfect, and Avila get more clutch hits.  We’re in the homestretch boys; let’s bring it home.  Go Cubs!

Q and Avila have been 2 great pickups for the Cubs this season. I think we all knew what Q would bring to the table. Solid outings time after time. Yes, he picked up the 1st inning blues, but more times than that, he is going to give the Cubs a chance to win each time he pitches. What more can you ask for? As for Avila, who knew how big a role he would play? Yes, he was picked up to spell Willson from time to time, but has now become the everyday catcher since Willson has went down. He has done great with the pitching staff since he is a veteran catcher and continues to get big hits when needed, including in this game for the W. Even Rivera has been a nice add for the Cubs so far. Keep locking down the catcher position as Willson works his way back. Finish the bucs off and then take care of the brewcrew! GO CUBS GO!!!
