This Thursday was my last Fantasy Football draft. This year I’m in a record 3 leagues. The family league, the auction league, and now finally, the keeper league. I always said I’d only be in one league… welp, there goes that.
The keeper league required some different research. With so many people keeping their early round guys, the available guys looked a lot different to start the draft. Thus, the planning on who to draft and when looked a lot different. I took a different strategy in this league, keeping the later round guys that panned out vs keeping my best players that I took in the first couple rounds. The biggest example of that is the QB position. Last year I took Mahomes with my first round pick. In about Week 2, I picked up Justin Herbert off the waiver wire. So, I could keep Mahomes but lose my first round pick, OR keep Herbert and lose my last round pick; it felt like a no brainer to me. I know Mahomes is the best QB, but is Mahomes + a last round pick better than Herbert + a first round pick? My first round pick ended up being Tyreek Hill. I think I made the better decision.
This has been the strategy across the board. With an extra keeper due to a trade last year, my 5 keepers occupied my last 5 draft picks. Devin Singletary and Terry McLaurin were my first 2 keepers; I acquired DK Metcalf last year. This year I kept the above mentioned Herbert and Myles Gaskin. Not too bad for my last 5 draft picks… But… even though I had all my top picks, I was picking from a dramatically different pool of players. I still pulled Tyreek Hill with my first round pick; can’t complain about that one. Yet, I still wanted a premium RB. Chubb and Mixon were taken ahead of me; I chose Hill over Antonio Gibson. So 2nd round, I had my sights set on the rookie RB from Pittsburgh. Worst case, I would take Kittle. They were both taken in the 2 picks right before mine; ugh! My consolation prize was David Montgomery; I followed that up with Mark Andrews.

My last 3 players picked were Mike Williams, Dallas Goedert, and Jalen Hurts; my defense is the Bears and my kicker is Younghoe Koo. I’m pretty happy about my team. Still, my RBs are a bit suspect. Montgomery, Davis, Gaskin, and Singletary could end up doing the job, but… I’ll most likely be looking to move Tyreek Hill for another top RB; hoping he has a great first few weeks. Other than that, should be locked and loaded.
OK, that’s it. I know you LOVE hearing about my fantasy teams, but I’m done… I’ve closed the loop on draft season. You know who is even more into this than I am? My son. We are going to drive my wife absolutely crazy talking fantasy football this year. He’s already changed his starting lineup multiple times, has wanted to drop his defense and pickup a new one, and offered me a trade. To say he’s taken to owning his first team would be an understatement… haha. A boy after my own heart, let me tell you. Good luck in your fantasy league if you’re in one. If not, get in one! It makes for a really fun year, and is nice insurance against the Bears shitting the bed, although, that’s not happening, right?
