Did you really think Trubisky was not going to be the starting QB? Did you really think he wasn’t going to be given one more chance? I’m sure there was a little bit of truth to the whole QB competition thing; if Trubisky looked like total crap, Foles may have gotten it. But if the Bears were really done with Mitch, they would have signed another QB this offseason. The minute they signed Foles, you had to know Mitch was going to get another chance; I’m OK with it.
He didn’t ask to be traded up for. Nobody knew these other QBs drafted the same year after him would be awesome. He didn’t miss the field goal that ended what appeared to be a magical year for the Bears. Mitch has a lot of things to be accountable for, but none of these fall in that category. It’s also not Mitch’s fault that we’ve never had a franchise QB… that we are QB starved here in Chicago. When you add all this up, the microscope that the QB of the Bears plays under doesn’t stop. You have to realize this coming in. If you’re not everything we expected you to be, you’re nothing… unless you’re winning.
I’m not going to spend much time on his “first year” under Fox, when he was thrown in there in the middle of the season. First off, if you want to start at the beginning, after the draft that is, Trubisky should have been the starter day one; the whole Glennon thing was a joke. Hoping this Trubisky thing doesn’t end the same way. Anyways, skip that and bring us to year 2, year 1 under Nagy. I know it may be painful to remember that because of the ending, but were we bitching about him then? Yes, he did play well. Was he the franchise? No, but he did enough to win games, and at the end of the day, that is what counts. He didn’t play lights out in that playoff game, but down the stretch, he did enough for us to win the game; enter Cody Parkey… exit Bears season. Gut shot…

That painful loss would propel us to greatness, as have many of those in the past. Was there pressure to be as good as 2018? Was there a hangover from the ending? Did we think we’d just walk on the field and get back? Well, Mitch started like shit in 2019; there’s no denying that. Then he got hurt; you do believe he was hurt right? When a player suffers an injury mid-season, they may not come back 100% that year, right? It’s just facts. Mitch came back, and had some good moments, against crappy teams, but at the end of the day, for him and the Bears, 2019 was a year to forget. So because of 2019, because of one season, we’re going to flush Trubisky down the toilet?
He deserves another chance in my opinion. Look, I’m not blind either OK; he does have his issues he needs to work out. Every missed throw feels like 10 missed throws, especially seeing these other QBs do well, especially coming off the Cutler disaster, especially never seeing a franchise QB when the NFL is full of them, when that is almost required nowadays to win it all. Our patience is thin in this category. Play good defense, run the ball, that’s what we were raised on. Times have changed, and although I still love the D and the running game, the QB needs to do his part; Mitch needs to do his part. He doesn’t have to be Mahomes; he can’t be Mahomes. Mitch needs to be the best Mitch he can be; hopefully that will be good enough for the Bears, because here we go again… are we going to squander another great defense?
He needs to make it happen in 2020; this IS his last chance. If he doesn’t, depending on how soon that is evident, Foles steps in; Mitch’s days in a Bears uniform are numbered. We should all understand that. But this was the easy decision; Mitch deserves another shot. Sure, will that short leash factor into his play? Oh well… it’s Mitch’s tree and he’s sitting in it. He needs to man up, embrace the pressure, understand how he got here, and take advantage of this last chance. I’ll be rooting for him because I’m rooting for the Bears… always, above any one player. Whether it was Mitch or Nick, I’m there 100%. I believe Mitch deserves another shot; I hope he doesn’t F it up. Bear Down!
