September 4, 2019: Week 1 Preview Packers at Bears

Ah yes, the start of Bears season is upon us.  Tomorrow will be the start of what we all hope will be a Super Bowl season.  We hope for that every year; it’s just most years that’s a pipe dream.  There have not been many years in recent history where our Bears have a legit shot at glory.  Even last year kind of snuck up on us… I know there were some of us who rationalized our playoff exit last year with a “we still did better than expected” or “if you told me before the season that the Bears would make the playoffs” type BS.  After watching how the Rams embarrassed themselves in that Super Bowl, it was pretty clear to me that we would have represented the NFC much, much better, and that last year DID provide a legit chance.  As for me personally, the way I got through the depression was to call it the ultimate paying of dues.  I looked back on previous Chicago championship teams, and how most of them experienced some form of extreme heartbreak prior to climbing to the top of the mountain.  It is this thought, that got me through…   So I buried my feelings in a hole in my backyard; I’m good at that.  Waiting, waiting, waiting for the Bears to step foot on that field again, and prove my feeling right.  Waiting for our boys to show the whole world that we will finish this unfinished business.  Waiting for them to reward us die hard fans with that elusive 2nd Super Bowl trophy.  The time is here.  The time is now.  I’m fricking pumped!

And what better of an opponent to start this journey off with than the Green Bay Packers.  Man do I hate them.  Somebody from work was telling me that the 1985 Bears Packers game in Green Bay was on the NFL network recently…  I remember that one; yes, this hate for the Packers runs deep… I believe that was the day it started for me.  Cheap shot ass artists Mark Lee and Ken Stills… taking shots at the one and only Sweetness and his trusty sidekick Suhey.  I remember the hate running through my 9 year old soul… then of course the slam of the punky QB… the Halloween beatdown of the Bears on the night we retired Butkus and Sayers numbers… the fact that they lucked into 2 HOF QBs in a row… the fact that they’ve owned us for a good part of that time… I could go on.  Yes, to say this is just another game would be kidding ourselves.

Last year brought a mixed bag of results with the Packers.  Our season opener last year was the ultimate mixed bag, kicking their ass in the first half, then watching us give it away in the 2nd half; that was not a good way to start the season, yet… I went to the well, and said that we would learn from it… we would get better because of it.  And we did.  The final matchup with the Packers last year was glorious, minus Eddie Jackson’s injury of course.  We beat them down in Soldier Field to clinch the division and watched Rodgers get tossed around like a rag doll.  Ah… take a good whiff of that one… breathe it in… yes… that’s good.  Winning the division, making the playoffs, sending the Packers home… not many better ways to end the regular season.  Was that payback for the first matchup?  If so, to me, that was only the down payment.  We have a couple decades to pay back… We get our first chance Thursday night at Soldier Field.

I feel like I could write for days here… but need to cut it short right now.  Unfortunately I will not be able to gear up to work tomorrow, having to dress up for some work stuff.  I’ll have to wait to get home, to slap on that jersey, and plant myself in front of the TV, ready for the start of Bears season.  It doesn’t get much better than this to kick off a season.  It’s our time.  I’m ready for the first chapter.  Bear Down!!!
