September 4, 2018: The Ugly Losses

posted in: Cubs | 0

There have been some ugly ones this year… there always are, but out of all the ugly losses that the Cubs have sustained over the years, Tuesday night in Milwaukee may have been the ugliest; I’m so glad I missed it.

Yeah, season 2 of Ozark took precedence on this evening; pretty damn good show by the way.  I was a little disappointed with the way season 2 ended, but have to remember that they need to set it up for season 3; they will be back.  And so will the Cubs…

I was reading some stuff about the walks, the HBPs, the wild pitches, the errors… no need to watch these highlights.  I had checked in at 6-1; I was shocked to see 11-1 as the final, but maybe I shouldn’t have been.  When the Cubs lose, sometimes they lose big.

57 losses this year at this point ain’t too shabby.  Still 24 games over; still have a 3 game lead.  As far as the 23 games in 23 days go, our record is sitting at 10-5 with 8 to go. I predicted they would go 25-14 the remainder of the season at that point, so that’s 15-9 the rest of the way out; that’s very doable.  But back to those ugly losses…

What would you define as an ugly loss?  For the purposes of this blog, I will say losing by 5 runs or more, deal?  OK, so a quick browse at the Cubs schedule sees 16 of these losses.  A quick calculation shows that 28% of the Cubs losses this year have been of the ugly variety.  I hate watching those games; it’s even worse being there, although is it ever a bad thing to be at Wrigley?  This is how the ugly losses break down:

2 of those in April, 2 in May, 4 in June, 2 in July, 5 in August, and now 1 in September.  The worst loss of the season was the 18-5 loss vs St. Louis back on July 20th.  This loss against Milwaukee comes in ranked number 2.  We lost 4 games by a total of 9 runs each; I was at one of those back in May against the Indians.  I guess one question is, does it matter if you lose by 1 run or 10 runs?

One school of thinking is a loss is a loss is a loss, any way you cut it.  It still counts the same in the standings.  Yes, we do track run differential, but it doesn’t factor into anything.  Another “good” thing about a loss like that, it kind of takes the pressure off for a minute.  When you’re down by that much in a game, and although the Cubs have made some glorious comebacks this year, you relax a bit; you’re not pressing as hard.  A quick mental break in the 23 in 23 can’t hurt right?  We’ll see Wednesday night where the Cubs look to avoid the sweep; that’s all they really needed to do in this series.  On the flip side, a stomping like this could make you feel like crap, and could ignite the other team’s mojo, which could lead to more of the same.

I go back to Joe’s philosophy.  Win or lose, forget about it in 20 minutes…or something like that.  That’s a super philosophy, and a great way to get through a 162 game baseball season.  I think this has been one of the keys to the Cubs consistency over the last 4 years.  I thought they’d bounce back in this one, but feel even better about them on Wednesday.  I hope I’m right.  Go Cubs!

Ugly losses are never fun, but they do make it easier to handle. Yes, a loss is a loss no matter by a run or 20. The blowouts are easier to handle and get over. Over the course of 162 games, some ugly losses will happen. Get the starters out. Maybe get a few position players to throw some innings. Then forget about it and bounce back the next day. Joe’s philosophy definitely helps. Not a good time to get swept by the brew, so let’s go out and get a W Cubbies! GO CUBS GO!!!
