September 4, 2016: Kicked to the Curb

posted in: Bears | 1

Sunday night brought some surprising news for us Bears fans.  The Bears kicked their all time leading point getter to the curb. Robbie Gould was released.

I was pissed off.  He was the last connection to the 2006 Super Bowl team. He was one of the most accurate kickers of all time. Through the lean years, he’s been the one consistent source of points. The Goulden Toe. Good as Gould. They were just some of the terms used to describe him. We knew when he lined up to kick, it was good. He did miss some big kicks last year… Maybe Vegas got to him.

Now the Bears got to him. Using those kicks from last year, a poor preseason (like who gives a shit about that), and all that money he was set to make as reasons to let him go.  I was shocked; maybe I shouldn’t have been.

We kind of knew Forte wasn’t coming back, although it made all the sense in the world to bring him back. Now we only have Langford.  The decision not to bring back another all time Bear is something we’ve seen more often, from Urlacher to Forte to Gould. These guys were all my favorites; they were not Pace or Fox guys.

So no loyalty, should we be surprised?  I am all for making decisions, tough decisions to better the team; I’m not convinced any of those did that. Having Urlacher around another year to pass the torch properly, signing Forte for reasonable bucks to split time with Langford, or keeping the all time point leader for the Bears, didn’t make sense to this regime; I know Urlacher was the previous regime’s decision. Still, with no wins, no playoffs to back any of these decisions, it’s hard to support them. Are we supposed to be trusting in Pace’s every move?

I’m still in the seeing is believing stage.  What is the Bears plan?  What is the big picture here?  Sunday it was dump a kicker we know, for some other guy who almost needs another hand to show how many teams he’s kicked for. Then we swap the long snapper at the last minute; a week before the games begin. Finally, we sign an OL who the Packers just kicked to the curb themselves; we’re excited about that?

When it comes to evaluating talent in this league, the Bears still need to prove something. The 2 teams that don’t are the Pats, and I hate to say it, the Packers. So let’s jump on a player that they thought wasn’t good enough; sorry for not jumping up and down. Sorry for not believing the Bears know what they’re doing switching the long snapper the week before the season begins. Sorry for being pissed off for letting go of the best Bears kicker of all time, for some journeyman.

I hate to be like this. I want to support…I want to believe in these guys. I’m just not seeing it. A week from today, it’ll be time to show and prove. Of course I want them to do well, to win a bunch, to make the playoffs…sorry if these decisions aren’t helping me feel that way. Seeing is believing.  Houston is exhibit one.

Kickers are expendable. Robbie found that out. Bottom line, he was making too much money. Yes, he missed a few kicks last year and a few this preseason. What kicker doesnt miss from time to time? How many times was Gould the Bears only offense? Very surprising move. Is it the right one? That is yet to be seen, but this regime is doing things and making moves. Will they all work? Probably not. Do we have to like them? No. Should we trust them? Stay tuned. Week one right around the corner.
    BEAR DOWN!!!
