You ever had a bad day? I’m sure the answer is yes. We all have bad days; none of us are immune to that. For me, throughout most of my life, luckily, those have been few and far between. Nowadays, I seem to have more bad days than I ever had; I think I know why. Of course, there are many contributors to “having a bad day”. Monday September 30th can be classified in that category.
Right out of the gate, we found out Dikembe Mutombo died, the ultimate bad day. Yeah, brain cancer… crazy. The good thing about somebody passing, at least somebody famous dying, is all the stuff you can see about that person’s life that gets posted on Twitter or wherever; Mutombo had plenty of great moments. I remember as a Nugget, his 8 seeded team defeating the #1 seeded Supersonics; I want to say that was the first time that had ever happened. Of course, all of his blocked shots over his career; he certainly was a defensive specialist. I saw a cool story about what he used to say when he’d go out to the clubs back in the day… he’d walk in and say “who want to sex Mutombo?”… haha, classic. Of course, the MJ closed eye free throw for Mutombo, and finally his poster in the playoffs over Atlanta Hawks’ Mutombo, with a finger wag for Dikembe that earned him a technical. He seemed like a pretty good dude, but what do we know. The message his son posted about him tells us everything we need to know. RIP Dikembe.
Just coming off that news, then Pete Rose dies?!?! WTF. An absolute legend, the hit king, Charley Hustle… so many great highlights and stories of Rose. I got to see the end of his career, but man, this guy on the baseball field was full speed 24/7. I liked one of the nuggets I read about him… Between the ages of 32-41, he only missed 4 games!!! Do the math. 162 games is too much… wah wah. If you truly love the game, it doesn’t matter how many games it is. Of course there’s the whole gambling side of things with him, which is what kept him out of the Hall. Although gambling is wide spread today, and of course I have been/am quite the fan, betting on your team as the manager is a big no-no. It earned him a lifetime ban, but… now that his life is over… HOF? It kind of sucks getting in after you die; I remember that happened with Ron Santo too, and many others I’m sure. Still, if anybody deserves to be in for their accomplishments on the field… RIP Pete.
OK, so yeah, those are the ultimate bad days. Taking it a notch down… I lost the fantasy baseball championship on the last day of the season; my son lost his fantasy baseball title game on the last day of the season. Plus, we both lost painful fantasy football matchups. I had a 90%+ to win going into MNF, but when Levis got hurt immediately in the game, I was in trouble… yep, loser. My son… debated on who to put in his flex… Cole Kmet or Kenneth Walker, coming off an injury. I suggested Walker; he went with his gut and started Kmet. A 25 point difference later cost him the week. It happens.
Enjoy the good days while you have them; the ultimate bad day comes for all us eventually. Let’s turn the calendar to October, a month that I’m sure will be filled with good days…
