September 30, 2019: Backing Up

posted in: Bears | 0

Shortly before the Bears game this week, it was announced that the Bears would be without some pretty important players on the defensive side of the ball.  Akiem Hicks, Roquan Smith, Bilal Nichols… 3 defensive starters would be out against this vaunted Minnesota rushing offense.  Was I worried?  Sure, a bit.  That’s right up the middle that we would be short.  It turned out to be a non-issue as the Bears depth was on display in the Bears 16-6 win over the Vikes.

Is our defense THIS good?  The Vikes looked pathetic out there.  I knew our defense would be good again, Fangio or not.  To think that we’re even better than last year is a very pleasant thought.  So far so good on that note.  Nick Williams got a chance to start on Sunday.  If you didn’t already know his name through the plays he’s been making each week, you know now.  Even the Rock gave him a shout out for his little celebration after yet another sack.  Roy Robertson Harris was in the mix again.  These DL guys rotate as it is, but with even more playing time than normal, they showed up big.  How about Kwiatkoski?  Not bad filling in for Roquan.  He made a couple nice plays, making immediate tackles on catches, splitting two blockers, but the best was when he plowed Cook right into Cousins on a blitz.  Impressive.  And how about 57 flying around out there?  I know his name now, Kevin Pierre-Louis.  Even Aaron Lynch on the DL has been good for more than just a penalty every week.  The secondary was solid, and Mack was Mack.  The defense is starting to explode… again…

And then on offense… we knew we’d be without Kyle Long, but shortly into the game, we would be without our starting QB Mitch Trubisky.  Chase Daniel did an excellent job filling in for him.  He is a perfect backup.  He knows the offense.  He can come in and get you a win or two; he’ll be relied on again next week in London against the Raiders.  Love him, but of course you start hearing the whole “he’s better than Mitch” stuff.  I laugh.  I once thought that about Josh McCown, when he was filling in for Cutler.  I thought if the Bears let him play that year, just the rest of that season, that it would have turned out better than with Cutler.  I like Mitch better than Jay.  I don’t think Chase is quite as good as Josh.  I think Chase is great in a pinch; obviously the Vikings did not game plan for him.  I think he’ll be good enough next week too; with this defense, most should be.  Long term?  Mitch is the guy… for this year.  We thought we’d get a big indication if he could be THE guy for the long term with this home division game.  With the injury, we didn’t get any more supporting or detracting evidence.  Get well soon Mitch.

Tied for 1st place after the 1st quarter of the season; I like it.  I like what I saw on Sunday.  I was very happy.  Let’s not blow it against the Raiders, a team we should beat with anybody at QB… with our defense… especially an extra pumped up Mack.  Get the win and head into the bye week at 4-1, no worse than tied for 1st place.  Mitch get well, hopefully Roquan is OK, Hicks get healthy… come back and wreak havoc.  Bear Down!!!
