September 3, 2021: If a Tree Falls

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If the Cubs go on a 4 game winning streak, but they have been out of the playoff race for a month, does it really matter?

Yes, you heard that right; the Cubs are on a winning streak. I’ll tell you what, this has been the quietest 4 game winning streak in many years. Every year since 2015, if the Cubs won 4 in a row, whew… that was one of those “ups” in a long 162 game season, and it mattered too. The Cubs were in the middle of the playoff race for the past 6 years; this is how it should be. This year though? Not so much. The Cubs reeled off 4 in a row and it barely moved the needle in a season to forget.

Yes, the Cubs got a taste of another AL Central powerhouse of a team when they visited Minnesota earlier this week; they “swept” them. Does it still count as a sweep if the series is only 2 games? I guess so; we use that terminology if a team wins both games of a doubleheader. Whatever. It was nice to see Justin Steele and AA pitch a complete game shutout regardless of the opponent. It would be nice if both of those guys raised their games to the next level in 2022. Then it was the Pirates coming into Wrigley for a 4 game series. Can we play the Pirates every game? The Cubs weren’t going to catch the Pirates anyways, so might as well kick their ass. The first game featured a walk-off pop-up? It feels like I can use that to help describe this season, like THIS is the way the AAA Cubs have to get their Ws this year, like THIS is Pirates baseball, like… whatever. It was kind of ironic. Then the Cubs go ahead and win another on Friday afternoon; I didn’t see one highlight. I do know that this Schwindel guy has been tearing it up. I know this because he was on my watch list as we wind down the fantasy baseball season; somebody else snatched him. Is Frankie Boy a part of our future?

Don’t get me wrong; I love to see the Cubs win, even in down years. Yet, as I sit here and watch the rest of the highlights around the league, I see… KB’s new team the Giants, who are tied for first place with the Dodgers, winning in extra innings. I see Schwarber, “one of the best leadoff hitters” in the game, hitting his league leading 8th leadoff home run, and a big go ahead 2 run single late in the game to help the Red Sox stay right in the middle of the playoff race. I see the Yankees walking it off, and a certain #48 (Rizzo) out in the middle of the celebration punching people in the stomach. And yes, I saw the whole Baez drama which ended with him scoring a game winning run that only Javy could pull off. Excuse me if I’m not overjoyed with this latest Cubs winning streak…

Don’t get me wrong; I’m happy for our guys. I want to see them do well; I knew they would. I knew as soon as this whole contract thing with the team they helped win a World Series for stopped looming over their heads, they would perform. It’s good to see them play for a winner, I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that it isn’t the Cubs. “Get over it already”…nah… no, I can’t.

So keep winning Cubs; we have 2 more against the Pirates, so maybe a 6 game winning streak? Then we’ll face teams with something worth playing for like the Reds, Giants (yes, KB returns to Wrigley), Phillies, and Brewers. Then we’ll be put back in our place as just another team whose season is over… yay! Go Cubs…
