Well, well, well… I know it doesn’t mean anything to the current Cubs roster; it usually doesn’t. When stuff happens to previous teams, when you’re talking about the history of a rivalry in some cases, when something has happened that left a scar on your heart as a fan, these guys don’t get that. If something happened to the same team the year before or a couple years before, then sure; they feel that, that need for revenge, for some payback. Now since 2003, we’ve been blessed with that golden era I was referring to; we’ve been rewarded with the 1st World Series title in most of our lifetimes. Yet, the need still remains… at least for me… to exercise that delivery of revenge to a team that played a part in one of the biggest heartbreaks of my life.
They may be known as the Miami Marlins nowadays, but they’re still from the same state of Florida. They may be better known as the team that broke the COVID rules and contributed to an outbreak and missing of games during this season, but I remember them from what they did to the Cubs back in 2003. This fricking expansion team with no memories of pain, no years of suffering, coming along to knock off our destined Cubbies… and then finishing the job against the Yankees. Oh yeah, that was their 2nd World Series title… you know they have a Hate File already; have you read it? Here it is:
Yeah, that was almost 6 years ago to the day, and with everything that has happened since then, the hate has faded… but it’s not gone; it’s not forgotten. I’m definitely not one to hold a grudge in my personal life… sometimes in my professional life… but ALL the time in my die hard fan life. And the Marlins have not escaped this, even though the only reason I know anybody on this team is because I play fantasy baseball. Yet this is the type of team that you need to be careful with, especially in a short series. You underestimate anybody in a 3 game series, and your ass will be on the couch for the next one. I don’t think Ross will let that happen, although our boys have known to not bring their A game from time to time… to just think they’ll go on the field and win a game. Believe me, I’ve seen it enough times, that will be the death of us. Take it seriously, bring your A game, and we’ll be moving on. Don’t, and… maybe that hate comes rushing back even stronger.
I don’t want that. I want revenge. Nothing will compare to what happened 17 years ago, but defeating the Marlins in a postseason series will still feel pretty good; it will still fit the bill, fill that need I still feel to pay them back. Having a hard time to motivate the guys Rossy? Show the boys the video from 2003; bring in a few of us fans from back then, and I guarantee you, there will be no issue here. Go out there with some fire and kick the shit out of these fish… Go Cubs!
