The story of Jimmy Butler is well known. The kid from Texas who was told by his Mom he wasn’t wanted. This kid who was adopted and began playing ball at a junior college before ending up at Marquette. He ended up being drafted late in the first round, started off playing sparingly, and built himself into an NBA superstar. What’s not to like about this rags to riches story?
I love this story. Besides the fact that he overcame a rough start in life, obviously because this path led him to Chicago. He was one of my favorite players. He played ball, both sides of the court. He worked hard, he hustled. He became my son’s favorite player. We bought him his jersey. Then things started going south…
I didn’t blame him completely for not respecting FredBerg. I didn’t respect him either. I hated the fact the Bulls let go of Thibs…I still do. To go from playing for a coach like that to playing for Hoiberg… It’s not what anyone asked for, but it’s what we got. If letting go of Thibs wasn’t bad enough, next came the unthinkable; the Bulls traded Jimmy Butler. My son and I would talk about how bad a decision this was. I loved how Markkanen developed, and thought Dunn and Lavine were decent, but still could never bring myself to believe the Bulls made the right move. In my mind, Butler was a top level star, the kind of guy you need 2-3 of to win an NBA title, especially nowadays. We had one, and now we have zero…for now. Hoping the guys develop into that, but we gave our only one away. Stupid.
The Timberwolves became our 2nd favorite team. Heck, with Thibs, Jimmy, Taj, then Derrick, then Deng, and potentially Noah being there, they truly are the TimberBulls. I was rooting for them last year, and was joking around that I would get the NBA package to watch their games this year. It brought back memories of when the Bulls latest window was open, the one where we failed to get that elusive number seven. But maybe the T-wolves could make a deep run this year. It wouldn’t be close to the Bulls winning it all, but it would still be pretty damn cool. Then the news broke about Jimmy not wanting to be there; wait, what?

I’m not liking the way this next chapter is starting off. Why would he want to leave? Ok, besides the fact it’s Minnesota…hey, at least it’s not Cleveland. But seriously, the band is back together with some other young talent by the way, Buckets has only one more year on his deal, Thibs may be gone after this year…why not make one last run at this thing together before you sign with whoever the hell you want? Demanding a trade? Rags to riches turned into the development of a diva.
I don’t like it. There’s more to the story, I’m sure. Jimmy did get hurt last year; maybe he’s trying to move that cashing in of a max deal up a year, just in case something happens to him; I mean, he saw it first hand with Derrick. If this was the case, I wouldn’t be as upset. Maybe we’ll learn that eventually. Or, maybe he just wants to be Hollywood and play in a big market. Maybe he just wants to do his own thing…forget the reunion. Maybe he wants to team up with another star, and doesn’t believe in the young guys in Minnesota. Maybe he’s done with Thibs, and blames him for his injury because of all the minutes he plays. Maybe he wants to turn into one of those guys that take off every few games, doesn’t practice, kind of like Wade in Chicago. Maybe we’ll find out; maybe we won’t.
I’ll still let my son wear his jersey. I want to still like him…still cheer him on. I want to think his reason for this is a good one, in my opinion of course. I don’t want to believe he turned into an asshole. I don’t want to think Jimmy is a diva now. Not this hard working kid who made himself into a superstar. Who would play hard against guys like this, like Lebron, instead of trying to artificially build another super team….he hasn’t become one of these guys, has he? Did the Bulls make the right move getting rid of him? For the first time, I’m thinking they did. Say it ain’t so Jimmy.

another prima donna in the sports world. everybody loved him here and probably in minnesota when he landed up there. then everything probably went to his head, all the ‘superstar’ comments and he believed them all. now he’s just in it for the money, like sooooo many other sports figures. what a shame the managers and owners have allowed pretty much the entirety of the sports world to cow tow to the ‘entitled ones’.

Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. What is going on? The story is a good one. You made yourself a 2 way superstar in the nba, which is definitely rare nowadays. Yes, the Bulls traded you, but seemingly for the better for yourself. Now, the stories come out about problems with KAT. Are they that bad that you demand a trade and to certain teams? Sure does seem like something switched in that head, Jimmy. Used to be head down, hard work. Hollywood and the allure of big money and fame has overtaken the core principles that helped make you. We see it all to often in today’s sports world. You had so many fans because of who you were, what you did, and the effort you put in every night. Why stop? While you may be a superstar, you are still one of 5 on the court. Your leadership has always been questioned and rightfully so, especially with the recent demands and diva actions. Not liking it, Jimmy. Kind of glad you are not here in Chicago acting like this. Thibs helped create the monster and now has to deal with it. What a difference a few years make. Enjoy wherever you land Jimmy, and remember your own story and all the work you put in. It is a hell of a lot more important than being a diva!
