After splitting the first two games in St. Louis, and seeing Milwaukee hang on to win their game, the Cubs magic number is now 1. One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do…
I was ready to celebrate on Tuesday night. After the beat down the Cubs put on the Cardinals on Monday, I thought it was in the bank. Didn’t even care what the Brewers did; just knew that we would beat the Cards to kick off the champagne bath. Things have been going so well…
After hearing the fireworks after Bryant’s home run and the whole nacho man experience, things couldn’t get much better. This team was on a roll, 11 out of 13, and now, they were getting folks in St. Louis behind them with the celebration of the MVPs HR and the Addy selfies. I only winced when Baez fouled that ball off his knee. Of course, he promptly singled to left before getting taken out for a pinch runner; whew, bullet dodged.
So when Tuesday’s game began with a 3-0 deficit, after a costly Freeman error, I wasn’t too worried. The Cubs began to chip away with 1 run in each of the next 3 innings; problem was that the Cards added on too when Tommy “don’t celebrate in my house” Pham took Jake deep. Still, 5-3… we can do that. Then it was 8-3… then it was 8-6… then it was 8-7… I thought I was dreaming. It was kind of like that NLDS Game 4 comeback.
Somewhere in the middle of this, I had dozed off… so much for being ready to celebrate. My wife came out and yelled at me to wake up, and when I did, I saw Zorilla go deep to get us back within one. I guess my brother figured it out too… after sending me 4 straight texts without response… whew xrays neg, Brew win, JHEY!!!, and ZORILLA!!!, he called me up. Yeah, I had just woken up. Just in time to see the Cubs complete the comeback.

But they didn’t quite finish it off. You could see the boys were ready to pop bottles. Willson had a great AB to lead off that inning, inducing the leadoff walk. And after 2 Ks, Heyward drew another impressive walk, which brought up Freeman. He had made some nice plays after his error, and got some hits too…. how appropriate would it be for him to get the game tying or winning hit. But Joe brought in Baez; hard to argue that move though. Mr. Clutch who was resting his bruised knee, came up, and struck out. I was a bit disappointed, but not mad.
I was happy that Almora was OK after seeing him crash into that wall; losing anybody at this point in the season would be hurtful. Seeing Jake get hit pretty hard was not good; who will be that Game 1 starter? Wait, wait, wait… that Magic Number… you know, the loneliest number… is still not at 0. No playoff talk until then.
So Wednesday night it will be then, right? I don’t want to back in, although after 157 games, there’s really no backing in anywhere. Still, I’d like to beat the Cards, then celebrate on their field. Is that bad? Oh well… it would make me feel really good. Just to see the Cubs clinch again… we cannot take that for granted. It will be the first time in our lifetimes the Cubs make the playoffs 3 straight years; bam!
So let’s not drag this out. I want to make it official. I want to celebrate. I want to enjoy checking this first box, and start talking about checking that 2nd one. Is Wednesday night the night we make history? I’m ready. Go Cubs!!!

Cubs kept digging holes deeper and deeper, but the fought back to within 1 in the 8th. JHey and Zorilla go deep. I thought KB’s had a chance too but turned out to be a ground rule double. Unfortunately, Rizzo did not come through, and after some 9th inning drama, the Cubs fell to the red turds and kept their magic number at 1. Glad Baez and Almora are fine. Hope the Cubs clinch in stl on their field. Then, the Cubs can rest up and get ready for the playoffs vs the nats. 3rd straight postseason with a chance to defend their championship sounds good. I’m ready. Ready to win 1 more game, become NL central champs for the 2nd straight year, and make another postseason run to glory. Step 1 is first, winning on Wednesday night to get into the playoffs and take the nl central crown. GO CUBS GO!!!
