September 26, 2016: 99 and counting

posted in: Cubs | 2

We got 99 wins and we’re looking for more. Back to a much happier subject today.  The Cubs won their final home series against the Cards on Sunday night; why wasn’t I watching that again?

The win gave the Cubs 99 wins for the season; that’s the most since 1935. It gave them 57 home wins, which is a Cubs record.  That’s also 4 wins short of the Cubs total number of wins in 2012. My how far we’ve come.  My how far we still have to go.

It’s nice to get out the record book, and break some of those long standing achievements.  It would be nice to get back to the World Series for the first time since 1945. However, there is only one year I want to see matched, and that’s 1908.

Sunday night was filled with some nice moments for David Ross.  The send off he’s getting makes me feel like he’s been here his whole career.  He hasn’t of course, but being the elder statesman on this young club has really suited him well. He’s provided what this young team needs.  He’s also played a whole hell of a lot better than he did last year. It’s been nice to see.

The talk is about the playoff rotation. Maddon hasn’t announced anything yet, claiming matchups will decide, but we’ve penciled in Lester, Hendricks, and Arrieta in games 1-3. The next question is the catching rotation.  If the pitching plays out like that, the catchers would most likely be Ross, Contreras, and Montero.  Depending on who the opposition is, and more specifically who the opposing pitcher is, could help shape the rotation. Maybe it’s more about how each catcher matches up against that pitcher.  How much of a factor will that be?

It’s crazy to think about. First three playoff games would feature three different starting catchers. Speaking about records…I highly doubt that’s ever happened before.  And you know what, it makes a hell of a lot of sense.

If you asked me that question months ago, I might have had a different answer.  Willson should be catching every game because of his bat.  Lately though, Montero has been one of the hottest hitters. Ross has been a lot better all year.  I also think what if Schwarber hadn’t got hurt.  How would that have played out?

Catching is more about defense anyways. Ross is the best there, but the other 2 are no slouches. Pitch framing is still an art that Contreras is learning, but you can’t match his arm with the other two.  Would a base stealing team warrant more Willson?

I guess the most important thing is the pitcher’s feel with each one. Joe has mixed that up, which is great; which shouldn’t make that comfort the deciding factor. I think all the pitchers would be comfortable with any of the three.  Yet, there is always your favorite. And that’s why the Cubs will carry and play 3 catchers through this entire postseason.

Hopefully that’s a nice long ride; we know it will be a crazy one. It’s nice that Joe has these options. It just gives the Cubs one more facet to their game; one more tool that will help them win.  We need a full toolbox, and that’s what we have.

It was good for all these regular season wins; 99 and counting. We’re all hoping it good enough for 11 postseason Ws. Until then, how high will that win total get?  106 is the highest possible regular season win total?  What you got?

99 victories and the turd birds are done! DROSE could learn a lot from “DROSS” (I know too early) feeling the love even though he’s a nomad (Reds,Braves,Dodgers,RedSox,Cubs). Happy for him. Each MLB player should have one last run in the playoffs.

Enjoy it now Cubs fans, playoffs are around the corner, so stock up on beer, cigarettes, antacid, aspirin, weed and fingernails (if u bite them) its going to be one hell of a ride!

    Bleed Cubbie Blue!

Regular season records are nice, but they mean nothing if they are not followed up by winning the ultimate prize…see gsw this year.
Grampa Rossy got a great going away ceremony from the Cubs, and what a way to end your last regular season home game. You have only been around a couple years, but you have been and are instrumental, not only with the pitchers and catchers, but with this whole young Cubs team…thank you!
As for the pitching rotation, I think it will be lester and hendricks at Wrigley followed by jake on the road. While I am fine with that, I kind of think jake might pitch better at Wrigley in game 1, and lester can go in game 3 on the road. Lester is more experienced and might handle it better. Either way, it should be fine.
Keeping 3 catchers for the playoffs might not make sense most of the time, but who cares. It is time to win no matter what. Egos and feelings get checked in the clubhouse. No distractions now. Playoffs are a week away!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
