It’s time. Now that the Cubs are officially eliminated from the 2019 postseason, it’s time to start unpacking all of the emotions built up from this very difficult season. It gives me no pleasure to do so, but it has to be done. Where do I begin?
I want to go player by player, talking about the positives and negatives; sharing what I think the future should hold for each of them. I need to give myself a little time. It’s not good doing so right this second; the emotions are still raw. I need to take an honest look and not let my emotions get the best of me, especially when talking about our guys. There is no disagreement that change is required. How much, who goes, who stays, who knows; we’ll give it a shot though.
We’ll talk about Joe too, although I feel like his fate will be decided before I get to write about him. My piece on him will be a goodbye, and thank you for everything he’s helped us accomplish over the past 5 years. There’s no doubt, that whatever happens with our manager, that he will always be our manager in our hearts. You cannot erase what has been done; we will never forget 2016.
We can talk about Theo and the front office. Did they do everything in their power to put us in the best possible position to win? They surely haven’t been perfect, but who has? Could a change in the front office help get us back where we’ve grown accustomed to?

Us, Cubs fans, getting used to being in the playoffs every year. That’s rich. Something I thought I’d never see. The expectations around here sure changed quickly, thanks to the players, the manager, and the front office. I believe there is credit to give to our ownership as well. Just as there was plenty of credit to pass around for the past 4 years, there is plenty of blame to be passed around now.
We need something, somebody to point the finger at. Yeah, it’s his fault, or THAT’S why we lost this year. It can’t just be. There has to be somebody to blame for this. We feel like we need that. It’s easier that way. It just can’t be “things just didn’t work out”. I’d like to figure out why, just as much as the next guy. I don’t know if I’m smart enough to. I hope the people in charge are. This sucks.
I guess right at this very moment, I’m thankful to have lived through these past 4 years; I’ll be forever grateful for 2016. I hope 2019 is the exception, not the rule. After making the playoffs consistently, we can’t go back to the alternative. 4 out of 5 ain’t bad, and 1 is better than 0, right? I’ll miss watching postseason baseball; I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch, especially considering the teams that will be playing, especially in the NL. I know I’ll be rooting for teams to lose, a familiar resort for me once my team has been eliminated. I’ll tell you what; it’s a lot more fun celebrating YOUR team win.
We won’t get that chance this time around; I’m still a bit in disbelief. Yes, the mathematical chance is zero as of tonight, but I think we’ve seen this coming ever since last Wednesday in Wrigley, if not earlier. Why did this happen? Well, let’s start to unpack…
