September 25, 2018: Any Which Way

Are you still believing?  The Cubs took one on the chin for the 2nd night in a row at Wrigley vs the Pirates.  That magic number that was 5 on Sunday, is still 5 after Tuesday night’s action.  The Brewers beat the Cardinals both games so far in their series; that’s what we get asking for favors from our hated rival.  They are on the outside looking in at this point, with the Rockies winning again.  These next 5 days could be very, very interesting.

If the Brewers win out, that means we have to win out too, to win the division.  The Brewers have 1 more vs the Cards, and 3 at home vs the Tigers.  We have 2 more vs the Pirates, and then 3 at home vs the Cards.  Has everything finally caught up to us?  Will the Brewers finally take the division lead from us?  After this second straight ugly loss, it is possible.  It’s just a fact.

So what if the Cubs don’t win the division?  I’m not saying they won’t… they still have the best record in the NL.  I still have the ultimate faith in this club.  I’m just mentally preparing myself for this possibility.  Let’s walk down this road.

The Cubs magic number to make the playoffs is 1; I think we should remember that, especially right now.  We may be in danger of losing the division lead, but we are not in danger of missing the playoffs; we’re not going there are we?  No… although I’d love to get that 1 win sooner than later.  If… when the Cubs get that one win, and clinch a playoff spot, we can take a breath.  F the division worst case; it’s any which way to get into the playoffs.

So the Cubs will have to play a wild card game against either the Rockies or Cardinals.  Any time it comes down to 1 game, it’s nerve racking.  There is no dipping in a toe at that point… we’re jumping in, with our playoff lives on the line right out of the gate.  Let’s just leave that here… I’m not going to worry too much about that… yet.  There is still work to do; we still are in control of our own destiny.  I’m not throwing the towel in for the division by a long shot.  Like I said… I’m just mentally preparing for that possibility.

It’s been boom or bust offensively with the Cubs this year; the last 2 games have been bust, but we shouldn’t be that surprised.  Yet, this has to be the last 2 game bust streak of the season, right?  I guess hypothetically, we would go 1-4 the rest of the season, which would make this a 1-6 final week, and still get in.. .talk about limping in.  But the bust time has to be coming to an end; it’s boom season.  I’m ready to see it.

These last 2 nights have been tough to watch; 2 bad performances at one of the worst possible times… in Wrigley.  OK, I’m not going to dwell on this any more.  I’m not going to think about everything that could happen the rest of the week.  I’m going to bed, and will plan to watch the Cubs play again tomorrow.  I’m ready to see that W flag flying again.  Go Cubs!

The Cubs are hard to watch when the bats are doing nothing. It is so frustrating considering all of the talent offensively. I mean, how does everyone stop hitting at the same time? What is chili davis doing to fix this? I know from time to time, the Cubs will run into an ace or hot pitcher, but game after game of 0 or 1 runs? Come on Cubbies, you are better than that. As the week winds down, where will the Cubs end up? In the playoffs for sure, but as division winners and the best record in the nl or as a wild card team having to play 1 game for the rest of their 2018 future. I sure hope they win that division. GO CUBS GO!!!
