September 24, 2023: Shake It Off

Boy was I wrong about the Bears this week in Kansas City; boy have I been wrong about the Bears thus far this year. But, but… in the words of one of the attendees in KC on this Sunday afternoon, I’m going to try to shake it off.

It’s getting harder, you know? However, in the same frame of mind as last week’s loss to the Bucs, nothing can compare to the week 1 debacle; I’m already there man. Loss to the Bucs? Who cares. Loss to the Chiefs in Arrowhead? Didn’t we expect that anyways? A loss is a loss regardless if it’s 1 point or 33 points, right? I’m trying here…

Yes, I did expect a much better performance from our boys. Instead, we got more of the same. I feel like we’re losing a new guy on defense every week, like we’re that deep. Already down an offensive lineman, I think the Chiefs DL was salivating; even at full strength, protection seems to be an issue for us… which we knew about from last year… but didn’t do enough about in the offseason? Is that right? Fields continues to look pedestrian, but it’s the coaches right? Look, when you start a season with elevated expectations at 0-3, capped by a blowout, there is plenty of blame to go around. Remember, this is the NFL. From week to week, our mood changes; after 3 weeks… yeah, it’s pretty much fire everybody.

Yet, I’m still holding onto this towel; yes, I’m NOT throwing it in yet… it’s too damn early. We have 14 more games to watch, if you’re like me, and HAVE to watch each and every Bears game regardless of what we think will happen. I ain’t going anywhere. I want to give myself hope that this WILL get better; it HAS to get better, right?

I was glad my son wanted to play Monopoly during the game, at least somewhat distract my attention from the bloodbath that was happening on the field. There, sitting on the couch, in front of the TV, in my Butkus jersey, in disbelief. As the game continued, it got worse for me; my son owned most of the board and was absolutely obliterating me, to his delight. Oh yeah, the Bears had the same fate. With an offensive possession before the half and getting the kick to start the 2nd half, I felt like maybe we could turn it around, at least a bit. Nope! Hell no! Two turnovers, more points for the Chiefs, and a 34-0 halftime deficit; 34 IS one of my favorite numbers, but not today.

You know who is NOT my favorite? Besides Taylor Swift, especially after this game… the announcers. I’m sorry. I was mad the Bears traded Greg Olsen like most others, but I do NOT like him announcing; same with his partner. This is the #1 team?!?! Long gone are the days of Madden and Summerall, Musberger and whoever, Enberg and Olsen; sheesh. I had to mute the game as it went on. Between them calling for more called Fields runs and Olsen drooling over Swift, I had enough. Why on earth were the Bears calling Fields running plays down by 34 points??? That was the only thing that could have made this L worse… it almost happened too, although maybe some would be happy with that. Who knows. It’s all jacked up…

OK, I’m still here… hanging on… by a thread. Denver next week coming to Chicago? I mean, they just gave up 70… you think we could score 21?!?! I was thinking about checking tickets, maybe taking my son… do I dare? If this game goes south, I think the boos will be deafening. Aren’t we due for a W? Wait, are the Broncos winless too? Well, at least one of us will have our first win of the season, unless… a tie?!?! Hey, anything is better than another loss. Have some pride boys; step the F up. Let’s go. Bear Down!!!
