September 24, 2018: Parting Shot

Before moving on to the last week of the season, let’s take one last look at the cross town series that was.  The other first place team in Chicago (besides Da Bears) took care of business winning two of three in Sox Park.

It was goodbye to Hawk Harrelson.  I’ll say this about him.  He’s one of those guys you only love if he’s broadcasting for your team; even then I know Sox fans that got sick of him.  I stopped listening to him a while ago…too much bitching about the umps regarding any call that did not go the Sox way.  I don’t mind the homerism. He was just flat out annoying.  Both the Sox TV and radio teams were unlistenable to me.  Now that it’s Benetti and Stone, I could do it.  It was appropriate that the Cubs, the team Hawk loves to hate, beat the Sox in his last game.  I saw one of the tributes to Hawk in the booth.  Right in the middle of it, Schwarby went deep; priceless.  Adios Hawk… Remember to stretch, have your cans of corn, put plenty of gas in your car, stay gone, remember the duck snorts, and put one on the board for that Cubs 2016 title.

Back to those Sox for a minute.  Rebuilding ain’t easy.  The Cubs are a bad example, because so many things went right; our baseball guys are not only smarter than yours, but we got lucky along the way too.  That’s what it takes, and there is no one fomula.  After watching the Sox this weekend, I feel like they are still a ways off.

What’s up with Moncada?  You’re not going to compare him to a young Baez are you?  And Tim Anderson?  He should be coming around already no?  A young Starlin Castro?  Abreu has been out, that hurts.  But who else?  Palka?  Eloy is in the wings; he should be here to stay next year.  But the offense looks a bit light.  Definitely need an addition there via free agency maybe?  Bryce?

The Sox stacked up on the pitching.  Lopez looked the part, but Giolito?  And then there was the best pitcher Rodon, who couldn’t even get through three innings; so much for saving him for the Cubs series.  Thank you Ricky. And speaking of Ricky, how long will he be around?  They’ll need a real manager at some point.  Will Cease be the missing guy?  Kopech will be out until 2020; who knows how he’ll be when he returns.  Rebuilding ain’t easy.

The other tough thing is to be rebuilding in this town when the Cubs are so damn good.  And oh yeah, the Cubs are so damn young too.  We ain’t going anywhere.  In fact, when you finally do get things together, we’ll be waiting for you.

My final parting shot… Until then Sox fans, keep our name out of your mouths, and worry about your damn selves.  You’re not in the same league as the Cubs.  Just focus on trying to get to 500, then we’ll revisit this.  See you next year.

You can put Hawk out to pasture….YESSS! Seems like it has been way too long. He is definitely a homer for his sox and there is no problem with that, especially since he is their broadcaster. But he sure did seem to get real ornery the last few years…bitchin and moaning about anything and everything. I mean, to complain about the cathedral of baseball, Wrigley Field, yeah, that hate for the Cubs runs deep. Enjoy another series loss to the Cubs on your way out. And remember to stay retired…just pop into guaranteed rate from time to time to help the ticket sales. The sox do seem to be a couple more years away to say the least. They definitely do need that big name free agent splash. Good luck with all of it! GO CUBS GO!!!
