September 23, 2017: Extra Helping

posted in: Cubs | 1

As if the first game wasn’t exciting enough, the second game brought more of the same.  Game two Friday night vs the Brewers gave us another extra helping of baseball, going to extra innings for the second straight night.

And the Cubs would prevail yet again.  As we entered extras, each team had the same line score: 4 runs 8 hits 0 errors.  It represented what was a truly an evenly played game.  Actually, both of these games have been.  Both of these games could have easily been won by either team.  But the same team was able to snatch both of these playoff like games.

Edwards, who got the win, actually compared it to how he felt when he came out for that famous bottom of the 10th last November.  Although nothing will ever top that, I understand what’s he’s saying.  It’s like I said yesterday: we’ve waited all year for games that brought us close to the same level.  We’ve found that here in Milwaukee in games 152 & 153.  While the Brewers seem to be wilting, the Cubs are thriving in this next level type of game.  Does that surprise anyone?  We’ve seen them do it.

Yes, these are still only regular season games, but we’re starting to see them do it again.  Although last year’s regular season was ‘easy’, nobody said this one would be.  Last year’s postseason wasn’t easy…this year’s postseason….is still TBD.  Nope.  You won’t get me talking about that…not yet.  Magic number 5.

The magic number only went down by one because the Cardinals leap frogged the Brewers; so much for clinching in Milwaukee.  The earliest this could happen is Monday in St. Louis; that wouldn’t be so bad.  But we’re not done in Milwaukee; we still have business to attend to.  Although we said a series split would suffice, with the Cardinals giving it their last ditch effort, we need to keep winning.  Hendricks and Quintana are up next.

Because it really doesn’t matter what the Brewers, Cardinals, or any other team does.  We hold the key to the NL Central title; we’ll be holding it for a while.  Regardless of the Cardinals always being in the conversation, or the Brewers one year away, or the upcoming Reds or Pirates, let me remind you: the Cubs aren’t going anywhere.  We’re built for long term success.  But back to the last 9 games at hand…  5-4 gets us that NL Central title for the 2nd straight year.

One of the things that I love about this team are the baseball instincts.  Baez is off the charts; it was so cool that they were chanting his name when he came up in the 10th.  Addy has some of that two; I like how Len said if there were a list of top ten tags of the year, Baez would have nine of them, and Addy would have the other.  His tag in maybe the game’s biggest moment was absolutely textbook; keep that glove on the base runner the whole time.  And how about Bryant; his eye at the plate, his base running…he’s got it all.  And then there’s Rizzo; the leader, with his phenomenal defense which saves us a ton of errors, his two out choking up…loved how he golfed that single last night.  And that’s just the infield…

The last guy I’ll mention, a guy who I think will have an impact in the postseason this year, is Tommy LaStella.  When he came up last night, I knew something good was going to happen.  And it did.  He drew the game winning walk.  It’s 3am somewhere…

And we’ll be back at it again Saturday night.  I see these other teams…the Indians great winning streak, the Dodgers clinching on Friday night…yeah, but don’t forget about us.  We’re just out here getting that feeling back.  That feeling we had when we we beat you in the NLCS; that feeling we had when we beat you in the World Series.  You want the chance to get us back?  You sure?  Stay tuned.  Go Cubs!

Another 10th inning W that lowers the magic number for the Cubs! Another great game for the Cubs as all of the team efforts begin to show even more. The Cubs will need their entire roster to lock up the nl central and make a strong defense of their championship. The Cubs have played and are acting like this is the playoffs already, and I love that. It is time. Playoff mode is in full effect. The Cubs talent and depth need to shine bright now. Lock up the NL central and get ready for playoff baseball. I am not worried about cle, hou, or anybody else in the American league, just like I could care less about the almighty dodgers. I will worry about whatever team the Cubs play in the postseason when that time comes. Everybody else should be worried about the Cubs. We are the defending World Series champs! They want to be the best, they better beat the best…the Cubs! Get in line. The Cubs have been doing it all year. It may not be as dominating as last year, but yet here the Cubs are…target on their back and all. These last 2 wins have solidified my confidence in the Cubs. It never faltered, and it is not overconfidence, but it is a belief that this Cubs team can do the same thing last year’s team did. Win it all! Finish the brew and red turds, lock up the NL central, and get the playoff roster and rotation ready. Don’t look now, but the Cubbie blue train is picking up steam…all aboard! GO CUBS GO!!!
