September 23, 2016: Week 3 Bears at Cowboys

Do we really have to?  Yes, we have to talk about the Bears and their week 3 match up in Dallas.  If weeks 1 & 2 are any indication, week 3 will not be much better.

The Cowgirls are 7 point favorites.  They haven’t beaten the Bears since Thanksgiving 2004.  Dallas has lost 8 straight at home in general.  The Bears are 2-0 vs Dallas in their new stadium; undefeated!  Unfortunately, none of those stats really matters in this one.  I’ve picked the Bears both to win and ATS the last 2 weeks; will I be that stupid again?

Jay Cutler will not be on the field.  He was one of the 15 Bears listed on the injury report this week.  Alshon may miss too.  Now, I wouldn’t mind if Cutler never played another down with the Bears, but that doesn’t mean we’re better without him… or are we?  How will Hoyer do at QB this week?  When the Bears acquired him, I thought at least he would be a good backup.  By no means are the Bears planning for the future at QB, something they should have been doing for a while now, but at least, at the very least, they found a serviceable backup… at least one more serviceable than the ones we had.  Because no matter how tough or not tough you think Jay is, the fact is, he misses games almost every year.  We needed a reliable backup.  Maybe he does better than Cutler?

Well, Josh McCown did that one year.  You know, the one where Jay should have never seen the field again.  Again, not saying he was better long term than Jay, but at that moment, he was the best choice.  Now long term Jay didn’t really pan out either, did he?

OK, enough about the QB.  I actually thought the defense played decently last week and the week before.  Yes, they still cannot get to the QB consistently, but what defense can?  Any one playing us.. duh duh dum.  At least they put some nice hits on Wentz last week.  Still, I thought they did enough both weeks for us to win.  They are by no means a top defensive unit at this point, but with a little help from the offense, like scoring some points, like not turning the ball over and giving the other team great field position, like running the ball and keeping the other offense off the field.  Yeah, they’ve been behind the 8 ball, but thought they’ve played OK.  Now, the injury bug has struck.  Houston donezo.  Goldman out for a while.  Danny T out this week.  McPhee still in street clothes.  How will they perform this week against another rookie QB?

Just when I thought the special teams sucked, Eddie Royal returned a punt to the house.  He was one of the few guys that actually played well last week.  Not sure about good old Eddie leading the offense, but any warm body at this point helps.  Kickoff returns have been non-existent.  Speaking of that… did you see one of Hester’s returns this year?  Past midfield.  Another guy the Bears refused to bring back…. like Gould, Forte, Marshall, Bennett, Urlacher….etc, etc.  All good decisions at this point, since the Bears have done so well the last… OK, let me stop.

It’s pretty sad.  The only way the Bears win this game is if Papa Vegas steps in, and demands it.  I guess that’s why we should pick the Bears to win this week.  Only when there appears to be absolutely no hope, will something happen to surprise us.  But I’m not picking them… not this week… not for a while.  All that panic before, during, and after the preseason, looks to be valid.  The Bears do not look like a good team whatsoever.  I’m hoping they turn it around; not banking on it though.  Monday night really pissed me off.  I hope I’m wrong now; I hope I was right before.  1-2 is a lot better than 0-3.  Anything can happen, right?  Go Bears…
