How nice to be at a Cubs game and not be stressing out. With the division already in the bag, and home field throughout the NL playoffs a foregone conclusion, the Cubs are playing the rest of this regular season stress free. Well, it should be stress free.
Watching Lester get hit with that line drive the night before was a little scary. Love how Ross reacted to it. Bryant too said he was scared. I think all Cubs fans were. When I saw it happen on TV, it looked like the right wrist at first glance; glad that’s what it turned out to be. I guess this will be the biggest worry until we get to October. Wednesday night’s game started off with another moderate scare: Dexter Fowler getting hit by a pitch.
We know what it’s about right now. Besides avoiding injuries, it’s about getting some rest, trying not to get rusty, and preparing for the playoffs. It’s a nice luxury to have, while other teams continue to fight it out. It made for a much nicer, stressless in person viewing in Wrigley last night.
To not live and die on every pitch, which is done too often during the regular season, and will start up again come October, feels good. It’s like going to see a game in person that does NOT involve the Cubs. Like the Sox games I have recently attended, or other out of town games I have seen in person, it was a relaxing, fun experience. It has to be like that when I attend a game with my son… I cannot stay seated the entire nine innings zoned in on each and every pitch. It’s time to make the rounds…

Waiting in the food line was probably the most stressful experience the whole night. That, and debating which section we were in with 4 guys that thought we were in their seats. I didn’t know, but now I do know, that sections 202 and 204 are the same bank of seats and split somewhere in the middle… which is exactly where we were sitting.
I was so stress free that I didn’t even mind leaving after the 5th inning; I think that’s the earliest I’ve ever left a game. The reason of course was because it was a school night for the preschooler, and because the Cubs were doing their thing, making that starter throw so many pitches, the game was almost 2.5 hours long in the 5th inning! Wanted to make it to the stretch, but who knows… that might have lasted another hour. So, we left, and I wasn’t even mad… well, maybe a little, but again, this game really meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. It would have been different had it been the actual clincher I was trying to guess by getting tickets to this game. It worked out for the best.
The Cubs completed the sweep of the triple A Reds by beating them 9-2. Now, we welcome St. Louis for a weekend set. I’d love to meet them in the playoffs again, and beat them of course, but maybe it would be just as good to take them out now. Sweeping them would really put a damper on their playoff hopes. We would avoid that rematch in the postseason altogether.
Being a few wins from clinching the NL, and from reaching the 100 win mark, there are still reasons to play for. Helping knock our rival out of postseason contention has a nice ring to it too. Either way, I’m locked in stress free from here until October. I have to save up for what could be the postseason ride of our lives. Until then, let’s avoid those line drives and HBPs, and get ready for it. Go Cubs!
