September 2, 2024: No Teasing

This is NOT a thread about teasers as it relates to gambling. This IS about the Cubs and their recent push for a Wild Card spot in the NL; no teasing boys!

What a run it’s been for the Cubs. Have you seen all the history they’ve been making recently? 8-1 on their recent road trip; not since the great Mike Quade have the Cubs pulled that off. 89 runs in those 9 games!!! First team to score 14 runs in an 8 game span since 1897!!! 99 runs in the last 10 games; 2nd most since 1900!!! It’s just crazy that the Cubs offense has absolutely exploded lately, considering most of the year it’s been missing. What gives? Maybe it’s just because it was August… Last year, the Cubs went 18-9 in my birthday month; this year… they went 18-8. Please tell me September this year will be different.

Well, if Monday night’s game at Wrigley is any indication… The Cubs were absolutely cruising in this first game back at Wrigley in a minute; it was an absolutely beautiful evening in the cathedral. Up 3-0 in the 8th inning, this game was on ice, right? After all, Hector Neris is long gone… pitching for the division leading Astros btw… go figure. The Pirates scored 4 in the 8th, and added 1 in the 9th; the comeback kids went down without a peep this time. Cubs lose 5-3. What a brutal buzz kill to the whole “the Cubs have a chance” thing…

The Cubs went 12-16 last September. If this is repeated, the end result of last season will also be the same. 2023 was a surprisingly good season that fizzled out at the end. 2024 has been mostly a disappointing season that just got a late jolt of belief; does blowing one game to start the month put an end to this? No… it’s never over until it’s over, and there is something to be said for playing your best baseball at the right time. Certainly if the Cubs can continue what they did on this last road trip, the Wild Card is in play. But, how likely is that? I hate to be a downer… I am always the most optimistic Cubs fan, but man… I just see this season playing out the same way last season did; I felt this way right at the start of the season. Running it back with the same team essentially… a new manager and an awesome find at starting pitching with Imanaga just won’t be enough IMO, but then again, who the hell expected the Cubs to go off like they have recently???

Tuesday night is next; the Cubs will face Skenes again. Last time in Pittsburgh, Skenes and Hendricks matched up, the Pirates were leading 10-3; we all know what happened next. I don’t think we want to continue to count on miraculous comebacks… How about we get a lead early and hold it? How does that sound? Go Cubs!
