September 2, 2022: Homestretch

Ahhh… you smell that? As the calendar turns September, it’s the homestretch of the baseball season. I can barely contain my excitement as the Cubs…. OK, let me stop.

I’m a little jealous, to be honest. I look at these other teams around the MLB, playing meaningful, exciting baseball, making their postseason pushes. For a minute, I envy those fan bases. Let’s start with the Mets. Please tell me you’ve seen the walk out song for Edwin Diaz, the Mets closer. It’s phenomenal. To see the fans going crazy, playing their own trumpets, to see Mr. and Mrs. Met going to town on their trumpets, the whole crowd in a frenzy… yeah, I miss that. I remember back in 2016, when Chapman would come walking in from the bullpen; we would go crazy. It was lights out time; game over baby, with Aroldis chucking up 103 to the plate, closing out another big win for the Cubs on their way to the World Series. Yeah, and if that wasn’t great enough, the guy that actually plays the trumpet in that song was in Queens this week. Diaz didn’t pitch in the first game, but he did in the second. Timmy Trumpet was on the field, blowing away as Diaz walked in to try to close out the Dodgers in a potential NLCS preview. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out. Diaz did close the Dodgers out; the Mets ended up winning this series, and the season series against the Dodgers 4-3. I wouldn’t mind if the Mets made it to the World Series this year. I wasn’t alive in 1969, and 2015 was pretty much instantly erased with the title the following year, so…

On the other side of things, you have a young team making some serious noise. This was supposed to be a throw away year for them, especially when they traded away fan favorite Trey Mancini at the deadline. Well, nobody told the young guys on the Baltimore Orioles that. They have been playing great baseball, and now, have called up some of their stud prospects to help make the push. Worst case, you’re giving these guys meaningful MLB experience, playing games down the stretch that matter. It’s a great situation to be in. I like the Orioles too. If it was a Mets-Orioles World Series, I would be happy.

In the National League, there are really no other good options. F St. Louis first off, and their retirees on tour; what a joke. The Dodgers… who likes them other than those faithful LA fans that come in the 3rd and leave in the 7th? The Braves are OK, but they just won one. The Phillies and Padres, meh; the Brewers, nah. So yeah, it’s got to be the Mets in the NL 100%. In the American League, we have other options. Certainly NOT the Yankees or Astros or anybody coming out of the AL Central. Sick of the Rays and their empty stadium, but Seattle and Toronto… I wouldn’t mind seeing them do something either. I’ve liked the Mariners over the years… Griffey, King Felix, etc. The Blue Jays have never bothered me either; their outfield of Moseby and Barfield back in the day… Ex-Cub Joe Carter and his swing of a lifetime. But yeah, like some of the guys on their teams currently; they’d be OK too.

As for the Cubs, it’s time for our favorite line, a line that hasn’t been used much since 2014; I didn’t miss saying it. This year though, I’ve been thinking it since the jump; wait until next year… I may be saying that for a few more years…
