September 2, 2019: Five is Enough

posted in: Cubs | 0

It was a long, long time coming. The Cubs were on a streak of 24 scoreless innings heading into the 7th inning on Monday afternoon in Wrigley. They were losing too, 1-0. The innings leading up to this point were anxious moments. Each inning that passed the mounting frustration could almost be felt inside Wrigley. Looking for any moment to cheer, booing loudly when Rizzo got hit again and again, waiting to explode in celebration of a single run crossing the plate. Yes, we were in the house today at Wrigley, and I’m happy as hell the 7th inning happened.

It doesn’t take a baseball expert to know that scoring zero runs per game is a losing formula. Odds are probably pretty high, not a sure thing, that if your team only scores in one inning per game, you will lose the game. Thankfully, five was enough to get the W. Let’s review.

It started with a Heyward walk. Jesus has he been bad. How long is Joe going to keep marching him out there in the leadoff position? Now that Ben is back, how long are we going to have to wait to see him? Surprisingly Nick was not involved in the one inning we scored in over the past 3 games, as he struck out. That brought up KB, who looked horrible today, and even drew a scattering of boos, although there were a few a couple times; there’s only so many scoreless innings one can take. Heyward stole second with KB at bat, barely. Maybe it’s only me, but he seemed to slow down as he got closer to the base; thankfully he snuck his hand in there. KB walked, which drew another loud cheer. That brought up the Cubs all time HBP leader. He did the hitting this time, singling to center scoring Heyward. The center fielder uncorked a throw to nobody in particular, and each runner moved up a base. Then Seattle showed how much they’ve watched the Cubs this year as they intentionally walked Almora; whew! Now it was the moment of truth, with the mighty Schwarbino at the bat.

I like Kyle. For all the changes that could be made, I really think Schwarber belongs here long term. Haven’t heard much about his defensive woes lately; is it just a given, or is he better? His average isn’t great, but his other numbers are; he’s also been going oppo a lot more. If it’s not a towering blast to RF, he’s serving them out to LF. The fans out there love him by the way; he salutes them as they give him a cheer that can be heard throughout the park. Wrigley got louder at this moment, hoping for the damn to break.

It only took a ground ball down the right field line to do it. Even if Vogelbach fields it, we take a 2-1 lead. But, for all those posts we hit with no goal, this one was the opposite. The ball bounded off the base and headed into the outfield. One run is in, Rizzo is in, and Almora…man did he fly around those bases, as Kyle cleared them with a rare triple. He’d end up scoring on the next play when the SS made a bad throw to home plate. 5-1 Cubs; that would be the final.

It felt good to finally explode, to let all those cheers out. It felt good to score a run, after feeling it may not ever happen again. If felt good to fly the W, especially seeing the Cardinals winning again. It felt good to be back at Wrigley; it always does. Hope to be back again before it’s all said and done; hope that’s in October. A win makes everything better; now we need to string them together. We can do this. Go Cubs!
