September 2, 2017: Saturday in the Park

posted in: Cubs | 1

It was the best way to kick off Labor Day weekend.  My wife hooked it up with a pair of Cubs tickets for my son and I.  She would be working, so she sent us to the game.  I couldn’t wait.

We got some good news a couple days before the game too: Jon Lester would be starting.  The reason it was such good news is that my son has his jersey.  Out of all the things I thought about when buying his first Cubs jersey, I didn’t anticipate him asking me every game if he was playing.  Of course, he only plays every fifth game, so many times I tell him no.  I try to explain it to him; he needs a position player jersey too.  So when we found out he was pitching, and we told my son, he was extra hyped up.

We got to Wrigley about 1130 or so.  I wanted to get there early enough so we could play catch outside the park.  He asked if Wrigley had the stuff like they had at Sox park; I said no, but told him we could do this.  It worked like a charm.  We threw the ball back and forth for a while with all the other fathers and sons out there.  It was very cool.  Now into the park…

This was the first time we would be sitting all the way up.  Typically, when taking my son to the game, we find 200 level tickets anywhere, knowing we’ll be walking around half the time.  This time we were in the 500 level.  He was a little nervous being so high, but we did have a good view of everything.  We saw the lake.  We watched them prep the field.  We had a perfect view of Rivera’s grand slam off the left field foul pole.  They were nice for the 2 plus innings we sat there.

We cracked open our bag of peanuts and his container full of goldfish.  We snacked, and patiently waited for the bases to be put in.  We saw Lester come out.  He was excited when as part of his warmup drills he was kicking his leg in the air, doing ninja kicks as I called them.  Then there was Bryant; he’s hard to miss out there, as big as he is.  His kicks were amazingly high.  Then we just caught them putting second base in; it was almost game time.

The starting lineups, the anthem, and then it was time to play ball.  Right before they took the field, they blared a classic Chicago song over the speakers…. Saturday in the park, I think it was the Fourth of July.  As my son sat on my lap, and I looked down at the field in absolute perfect shape, and looked up at the sun and blue sky, I smiled, and tried not to choke up singing the words of that song.  It was the perfect song for the perfect moment.  Maybe they play it at every Saturday home game, but I didn’t care.  Life is good.

Oh yeah, and the Cubs scored 14 runs on this day; they needed to.  They defeated the Braves 14-12.  It was six in a row for the Cubbies on this perfect home stand, and after picking up a pizza from D’Agostino’s to go to bring home for my wife and us, it was the perfect ending.  It just doesn’t get much better than this.

Saturday, in the park…great song! Not a bad seat in Wrigley, either. Just being there on such a beautiful day sounds better than just about anything. Glad you and your boy had such a great Cubs game. Turned out to be a slugfest, 14-12. Cubs have won 6 in a row and are perfect on the homestand trying to complete the back to back sWeeps with one more vs the braves. The Cubbie blue train rolls on. Looks even better when you’re there in person.
    GO CUBS GO!!!
