September 19, 2020: Playoff Bound

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

How does it feel Chicago, to have both baseball teams make the postseason? Sure, the Cubs haven’t officially punched their ticket, but that’s only a matter of time. The Sox on the other hand, broke their 12 year playoff drought on Thursday by beating the Twins. This shouldn’t be such a rarity.

We’re a big enough city to support 2 baseball teams, easily. Sure, the Cubs get more attention, have many, many more fans than the Sox, play in an iconic ballpark, have the most recent World Series title, and nationally are the more well known team, but there is plenty of interest in the Sox; they may not have the same numbers, but they have a strong core of die hard fans… most of them do not like the Cubs, some may say hate… but that’s not what this is about. It’s a celebration bitches.

The Sox are the hottest team in the American League right now. They have arrived. Do they have a real shot at winning it all? Why not. Rick Hahn says this team can win the World Series. My question for Rick is, if that’s what you really thought, then why didn’t you add at the trade deadline? Because if you really thought THIS team could do it, adding a couple pieces would help make them that much better, because I’m worried about the pitching. Sure, that kid they brought up on Friday night looked electric… out of the bullpen. But, Keuchel is the only proven postseason starting pitcher, right? Although how much does that really matter? The Sox could be a team that is too young to realize it. Giolito has a chance to take his game to the next level. Cease? Dunning? If their pitching can hold its own, watch out, because those bats… I mean, even when they have to face off against the best pitching in the league, should hold THEIR own right?

The Cubs bats are my concern. On Friday night, it was Hendricks, and Jeffress in the 9th, that made that 1 big run the Cubs scored in the first inning hold up. When I think about the Cubs in the playoffs, I’m feeling pretty good about Darvish and Hendricks; question is, will the boys score some runs? It’s kind of the opposite concern that Sox fans have. We have another 10 days to worry about the playoffs. I’m just waiting for the Cubs to officially punch their ticket; 4 games remaining with the Pirates makes me feel pretty good.

There is that other series, the last series of the year, the Cubs vs Sox round 2. Round 1 was brutal; the Sox kicked the Cubs around. Thankfully Yu helped us escape with 1 win. How much will that final series really matter? With the Sox already clinching a playoff spot, and the Cubs hopefully sewing theirs up by then, are we talking division titles on the line? Maybe; that would be pretty meaningful. A Cubs Sox series with REAL meaning? Well, there would only be one other type of series between the two that would have more. Is this year of 2020 going to bring us something else that we’ve never seen before in our lifetimes?

Yup, shaping up to be a ‘for real’ week-end series this time around.
Sox need pitching to carry the bats into/thru the post season. But when they lose, it’s like they all left their bats in the dugout. Just watched them score 2 in the 10th, but then give up 4 in the bottom for another loss.
Cubs…so happy they’re holding on to the division, but looking at the stats, wondering how!! Only 1 starter hitting over 250 means that everybody just needs to get at least 1 hit per game, and timely ones at that! And to complete the nite, watched the Cubs lose in the bottom of the 9th.
Think I’ll add them both to my ‘prayer list’!!!!
