Tuesday and Wednesday nights will be the last late nights of the baseball regular season. They may be the last late nights of the year, depending on who the Cubs are matched up with in the playoffs and when that happens. If it’s in the NLDS, maybe some more late nights; if it’s in the NLCS or World Series, they’ll push those start times up on the West Coast. I love these late nights…
I actually brought some work home tonight; I don’t love that. But with everyone asleep, I can sit in front of the tube, watch the Cubs, and catch up on a few things. It’s a lot more enjoyable when the Cubs are winning, and boy are they winning in game 2 of this series.
I did mention that this series had me a little worried. You know, travelling west for the final 3 games of the 30 in 30; hey, 30 for 30! Maybe this could be a 30 for 30 if the Cubs were to go on to win it all. To chronicle all that happened in these 30 consecutive days of baseball in the midst of a pennant race would be interesting. Let’s file that one away… it don’t mean a thing without the ring.

Currently up 9-1, I’m feeling like I can go to sleep soundly, without having to worry about a blown lead. We already got the good news that the Brewers lost against the Reds. What happened MVP Yelich? No more cycles left in your bag of tricks? Only 3 hits as a team, at home, against the Reds, as you’re trying to catch us? Nice job. And of course I’m joking about Yelich… the real MVP went deep again tonight. That’s 2 straight games with HRs for Baez; my brother called this one. It came after an 18 pitch AB for Rizzo, or was it 17? It was impressive, wore that pitcher down, and Baez didn’t miss. He is the real MVP no?
The offensive numbers jump off the page no doubt, but consider the total package. The guy could be a gold glove defender at 3 different positions. Not sure how many guys you can say that about in the league, but I’m guessing Baez is one of the, if not THE only guy to make that claim. And then there’s the baserunning… constantly pushing the envelope, always hustling, the great slides… And how about the intangibles? Do those count any more? The swagger this dude brings… the fun he has out there; I’m sure a lot of folks were pissed when he pimped that HR yesterday. And then there’s the whole best team in the NL thing, and only because of Javy are we able to be here. He has carried us at times. Tell me I’m wrong.
OK, no need to get fired up right now; it’s time to wind down. Zorilla just made a catch in right field and the Cubs bullpen gave him a standing ovation; love it. And I’ll love seeing the lead back up to 3.5 with 11 games to go; magic number 8! I’ll trust the Cubs can get the final 11 outs without giving up 8 runs. Good night, and Go Cubs!
