September 18, 2018: Three in the Desert

posted in: Cubs | 0

The Cubs were able to win the series against the Reds at Wrigley, barely.  That was good enough for a 2.5 lead with 13 to go.  Now it was time for three in the desert; it will be the last time the Cubs will leave city limits in the regular season.

I can’t lie, I was worried heading into Arizona.  With our offense struggling like it is, getting on a plane and going across the country, had me worried we would see more of the same, especially since this would be games 28-30 in 28-30 straight days.  Tough, tough stretch that the Cubs have grinded through.  Although the Brewers keep pressing, and although the Cubs didn’t extend that lead like I thought and hoped for, we still got it.  Getting off on the right foot in game one would be big.

The Bears took center stage on this evening; I started flipping during commercials once the game started.  The Cubs were not scoring, again.  Plus, the earlier scores were coming in, and it was the Cards and Brewers winning.  As the Bears game went final, the Cubs got on the board.  Bryant has been looking pretty good since coming back; he was right in the middle of it all.  Big hit to get Almora to third, who scored on Rizzo’s ground out.  Then Baez went boom!  3-0 Cubs.  Bryant would hit a 2 run bomb to give the Cubs a 5-0 lead.  Yeah, there was that goose egg on the Dbacks side.

The professor Kyle Hendricks was dealing.  He was in postseason form, holding the Diamondbacks at bay.  He had the CG SHO in his reach when he came out for the 9th.  A home run and another hit led to Maddon pulling him, one out short of the complete game.  He wasn’t happy.  Tough job being manager is…getting Kyle out up 4 runs and saving those 5-10 more pitches was probably smarter than giving in to the complete game quest.  Although it only took one pitch from Wilson to end this one; the other Willson gunned Goldschmidt down at 2nd.  Big time win.

So the lead is maintained, and the magic number drops to 10.  Will the Cubs hold on and win the division?  Monday night was a nice double win for the Bears and Cubs.  Funny that the Cubs were in Arizona on the night Urlacher was honored, with possibly his best game ever taking place in Arizona, and oh yeah, the Bears heading to that state next.  Chicago transplants spending those bucks this week.  This Cubs game had way more Cubs fans than DBacks; expect the same at the Bears game. We represent, that’s for sure

Going to sleep with a big smile on my face.  Only crappy thing that happened was that Lockett TD cost me a fantasy football win, but that was 3rd in importance on this evening; I can’t have it all.  More than satisfied with the 2 wins; they were big wins for both teams.   Until tomorrow night back in Arizona…Go Cubs!
