Are the Cubs still playing? Of course they are. Baseball season isn’t over, per the regular season schedule, for another few weeks; you could have fooled me. My viewership of Cubs games has dropped off dramatically in the past couple weeks. I still follow the results closely, but have not sat down to watch a game in a minute. What’s been going on?
Well, the Plumber is still doing his thing. Hopefully Schwindel can take it easy this weekend since I’m playing against him in the first round of my fantasy baseball playoffs. The longer he keeps this up, the more likely he will be a permanent part of the future with the Cubs… How likely is it right now? 50%, 75%? If it was up to the powers that be, it would be 100%, because he’s cheap… Hey, I don’t care. As long as the guy is performing, let’s do it. Then you got the Dentist tying KB’s rookie HR record. Yeah, I love baseball, but it’s been tough sledding lately. Am I supposed to be cheering on the White Sox success? Am I supposed to be rooting for the Brewers to win their first ever World Series? Am I supposed to be happy that the Cardinals, somehow, are in the wild card race… and have Jon Lester pitching for them?!?! Shit, even the Reds are still in it. But hey, the Tigers aren’t, so… at least there’s one team within a 300 mile radius that is in the same boat as us. But, go Midwest? F that.

Man is it good to see him playing ball again; my baseball plans for him went up in smoke with COVID. After dominating his 4-6 year old league, going undefeated, he made his first appearance in the 7-9 year old league. Of course, the other teams had a lot more of the 9 year old kids than we did; one in particular was loaded with older kids. As expected, it didn’t go well; we didn’t win one game, but… we did get a lot better. He started pitching for the first time; I was ready to get back on the field when he was 8 years old, with most of the same kids, and get some Ws. Well, that year was completely washed out. That brought us to this year; again, no baseball league… 2 years in a row no baseball?!?! We went back and forth with some private leagues, but at the end of the day, it was another summer with no baseball league… until now. It’s only 6 weeks, 12 games, but I’m glad he’ll get a chance to wet his beak. This will set us up next year for a 10u league if he’s interested. Going 2 for 2 in his first game back, with 2 RBIs, and a run scored… pitching an inning for the first time in 2 years, walking 3 kids, but striking 3 out too… and winning his first baseball game since 2018… yeah, it was a good start. Game 2 is Friday late afternoon.
So yeah, there is a reason to still watch baseball, but not necessarily the Cubs, or any other major league team. I’ll keep following the results, and maybe turn on a playoff game when they start, but… at least I’ll be able to watch my boy play for another 6 weeks; there’s nothing better than that…
