As the game winning kick sailed through the uprights on Sunday afternoon in Denver, it was never more clear to me: we have our kicker. We can finally move on from last year’s season ending fiasco. We can put behind us all the crazy offseason kicking theatrics. Sure, he will miss a kick at some point this season, but after this kick, it’s case closed. Eddy Piniero is the Bears field goal kicker.
He sure celebrated that kick like he felt the same exact way. Sure, I was yelling my ass off too, thankful to avoid an 0-2 start and all those graphics about how many teams that start the season 0-2 make the playoffs. But the joyfulness that was on display told me that a big monkey had been lifted off his back. God is definitely OK with me too Eddy.
Although those comments did remind me of Parkey and his skyward pointing even after his misses. Thing is, if you really believe in God, you know he’ll be there in both good times and bad. Thing is though, you have to put in the work to get the results you really want. There was plenty of questions surrounding Parkey’s work ethic. I don’t think you can question that about Piniero. Bravo Eddy!

Another rough performance for Mitch on Sunday. Am I worried? Not really, not yet. It’s only week 2, and sure, other guys drafted after him are busy tossing TD after TD. I’m sick of the comparisons to Mahomes. If the Bears could draft all their players after seeing how they perform in the NFL, then we’d have a super team that would never lose. Cut that shit out already. It is what it is, no take backs. Question is can Mitch be the guy for us? I think he can, unlike some whose judgment has already been made. Will he be? Jury is still out. One thing I do know, is that we need to continue to run the ball to help him. Too much passing week 1; too much running week 2? Nagy is still finding his balance with the play calling. I like what I’ve seen from Montgomery; I’m ok with Davis getting less work. I want to see more carries from Tarik, and after that burner of a run, Cordarelle. Offense still very much a work in progress.
On the other hand, no worries about the defense at this point, other than trying to gently lay down the QB when sacking him to avoid a penalty. Sure, Denver got hosed on one of those too, so we’re even. But man, the NFL has to figure something out. I get the helmet to helmet and the hands to the head and even the propelling of your body upwards to land all your weight on a QB’s shoulder, but I didn’t see any of that. No harm no foul. Bears won.
And a win is a win is a win no matter how we get it. And getting one in Denver in week 2 is impressive in itself. Nice job boys. Let’s get this train rolling now. Bear Down!!!

One of the greatest endings I ever saw.
