It’s all hands on deck time. With a little more than 2 weeks to go and a 1.5 game lead in the division, the Cubbies need everybody. They had some unlikely heroes in this big W Friday night.
Let’s start off with a Friday night game at Wrigley, speaking of unlikely. Very rare to see that, and thank you to the people who allowed the Cubs to push the start time back. At least somebody was thinking. Not many Friday night games in the Friendly Confines. The couple extra hours of sleep didn’t seem to be helping early on.
Cole Hamels is the first of our unlikely heroes. Before the year, who would have guessed it? Of course now that he’s here, and seeing the way he’s pitched thus far, he turns into a very likely hero from here on out. Another great performance turned in. He gave up 2, but minimized the damage and kept us in the game; that’s what great pitchers do, even when they don’t have their A stuff. But the pitchers who followed him, to close this W out, are borderline obscure.

Dillon Maples got the last out of the 7th after Hamels was pulled. I think he’s been in the system, so an educated guess may have put him on the roster. But asking him to pitch in a high pressure situation? He got the out. Next up was Jamie Garcia, ha! Ex-Cardinal starter, yep. He’s now coming out of the pen for us. And then Jorge De La Rosa to close it out? Amazing. Maples first career win and De La Rosa first career save. If you would have guessed that for the outcome of a Cubs game at the start of the season, I’d ask you for lotto numbers.
The big hit of the night came from an unlikely hero as well. Well, maybe he was more likely at the start of the season, coming off an impressive debut the year before, a hot spring training, and a home run in the first game of the regular season. But Ian Happ hasn’t done much of note lately. Well, he did tonight. And the guys on base that scored the runs…La Stella and Caratini. Tommy leads the league in pinch hits (should have hit yesterday…ok, I’ll stop), while Victor has been playing great at the catcher position. His hitting has even come around. Right now, he needs to be on the field. Not counting out Willson by a long shot, but he needs a break. Not sure if he’s gassed or what, but he needs to get his head right. Glad Victor has stepped up.
Friday night was really a testament to the Cubs as an organization. To have these guys contributing in a big win late in the season, bravo. Bravo Theo, Jed, Jason. And yes, bravo Joe. You got these guys, you got to trust them. I know that circle gets smaller down the stretch, and in most cases I would agree. Maybe this is one of those cases where we’ll be able to count on a variety of guys…and they’ll deliver…just like tonight. Big win. Go Cubs!
