September 15, 2016: Late Night News

posted in: Cubs | 2

It was 1:30AM when I woke up.  Normally, I’ll just go right back to sleep. This night I had to check my phone. I saw the score I was looking for.  The Cardinals had lost which made the Cubs the division champs. Too late for a beer though; back to sleep.

It was great late night news. The first goal of the year had been achieved. I was ready to celebrate earlier in the night.

I made sure that I was firmly planted on the couch for the potential clincher against the Brewers in Wrigley last night.  They jumped out to a lead, then went down, then tied it, then went down again, then pulled within one, then lost. It felt like it would be a walk off win to clinch.  That would have sent the city into party mode. It wasn’t meant to be.

With the game on Friday, it could be a repeat of last year. There will be a celebration after the game one way or another. Just feels weird to celebrate after a loss, regardless if the celebration is very well deserved. It’s no small task winning a division in baseball through 162 games.

That’s why it should have happened Thursday night.  It felt like in this season, that feels like THE season, that’s the way it should have went down.  A win Friday would be ok too. A loss followed by a celebration feels funny.

Either way it goes down, at this point, isn’t so critical. Like we all say, like the players and coaches and GMs say, this is only step one. There is much more celebrating left this year.  This is the first but not the last; it would be devastating if it were.

The throwing errors last night by Addison, the pickoff of Bryant, the inability to push that tying run across, unable to get that win, it gets a Cubs fan’s brain going.  It’s still the regular season, so it’s still ok, but…the playoffs are right around the corner.  This game felt like a playoff game even though it was against the lowly Brewers.  But we couldn’t get the W.  Should we make more of this loss and the things that happened during this game, or should we just chalk it up?

I want to chalk it up. I don’t want to think of anything bad yet. Once the playoffs begin, the fear will be there. It will be on the back burner; hopefully it will stay there.  I want this to be the year. I know we’re built for many years of success, but I want this to be the first.  I don’t want another heartbreak.

So let’s put that back on the back burner. Let’s not worry yet. Let’s celebrate the Cubs first division crown in 8 years. It’s well deserved, regardless of the way it goes down for the clincher.  First step completed; anxious for the next one.  Congrats Cubbies!  We’ve only just begun. Go Cubs!

Thank you red turds for losing again! Wouldnt have really mattered, though, as it is not like the Cubs would not win the division. Would have been nice to win at Wrigley last night, but it was the first game back from the road trip, and the Cubs did not get it done. Oh well. Time to enjoy the season long struggle of being 40 games over .500 and already clinching the nl central. Congrats Cubbies! Step 1 complete. Time to rest up, get healthy and ready for the playoffs. Oh yeah, winning home field at Wrigley is step 2 and that should happen soon, too. The partying at Wrigley will be sWeet. Enjoy Cubs…more to come! GO CUBS GO!!!
