September 14, 2018: Certainly Questionable

It was certainly questionable making the Cubs and Nationals play a make up game in the path of a soon to be arriving hurricane.  They made it out OK; of course it had to go extras.  But the most important thing that came out of today was that precious W.  Cubs lead is 1.5.

There were some other questionable things that took place in this one that have been and will be talked about all over Chicago.  The mad scientist Joe Maddon was at it again.  Let me first profess my love for Joe.  There is no other Cubs manager that I would rank above him ever.  With the Cubs on their way to a 4th straight postseason, and oh yeah, their first World Series in my lifetime, Joe is legendary.  I will always love him.  That doesn’t mean I can’t get pissed off at him once in a while.

I do think the heat he catches is too much.  He’s an easy target with his unorthodox ways and laid back nature, but isn’t that why everybody loves playing for him?  Isn’t that why he wins everywhere he goes?  You can certainly disagree with his tactics, but you can’t argue the results.  And don’t give me that crap that the Cubs have won in spite of Joe; that’s BS.  Without Joe and the culture that he created, that Heyward speech never happens.  Yes, I certainly did question some of his moves that series, but who gives a crap about that now?  We won the fricking World Series.

There have been other moves that I have questioned over the years, sitting here on my comfortable couch.  His lineup selections sometimes have me scratching my head, sometimes ticking me off.  His handling of the pitching staff sometimes irks me.  But overall, I can’t complain.  But in this game in DC, I was probably the most pissed at Joe that I have ever been; if he was my wife, I’d be headed to the basement, not talking to him for the rest of the night.  Still love you Joe…

But what the heck were you thinking letting Strop hit in that situation?  I’m not even going to bring up pinch hitting for Bote with Zobrist; Zorilla has been great, but Bote has been clutch…  And no I’m not going to talk about bringing in ice cold Contreras to hit for Caratini; well, I guess I just did.  But letting Pedro hit with the bases loaded… He already pitched in two innings… I understand he’s a better option than Rosario, but… it may have been a non issue anyways, if Tommy goes up there and gets a base knock.  Tommy is our guy in that spot all day…

Ok, then let Pedro take every pitch.  Nope, his first swing was for the fences.  His next one was a double play, which was the worst case scenario that Len Kasper warned us about…but he corrected himself, when Strop came up lame; THAT would be the worst case scenario.   Now, he may be done for the year.  I never thought I’d miss Pedro so much.  He’s been so good for us.  Now, he’s gone.

But the Cubs won, so all is well, right?  For now, yes, but without Strop, maybe the rest of the way out…

When I wake up tomorrow morning, maybe I’ll feel better.  I can’t stay mad at you Joe.  But you sure did piss me off.  Even the best manager of all time with our Cubbies can F up from time to time.  It’s ok, you can admit it.  I know about hindsight too though…  Keep being you Joe, if that means another World Series title or not; preferably another World Series title.  That’s all you can do…I’ll go back to sitting on that couch in the basement.  Go Cubs!
