September 13, 2018: Stepping Down

posted in: Cubs | 0

Nobody stepped up for the Cubs in this one; well, Hendricks pitched good enough to win.  But the offense… they continued stepping down.

Is it really all these games in all these days without rest?  Some people scoff at that; that’s fine.  But imagine for a second, that you had to go to work 23 straight days… wait, now 30 straight days without a day off…. plus you had travel included in that.  Not too good huh?  And yes, we all would love to have a job that allowed us to play a game for a living, but that is their job.  And although you can certainly love your job, and God bless you if you do, everybody needs a break.  So yeah, I sort of get that.

At the end of the day though, it’s just an excuse.  It may be valid, but nobody wants to, or cares to hear that.  The Brewers are licking their chops… they’re coming for us.  Now only 1 game out as we wind down the season.  Will the Cubs hold on?

I saw a picture this morning from the Cubs plane ride to DC.  It featured Rizzo still in his uniform with a bunch of the other players all smiling.  It made me feel better.  To see the guys still having fun, although we’re in the middle of this grueling stretch at the end of a 162 game season, and our lead has shrunk to one, they’re still in good spirits.  Why wouldn’t they be?  Why wouldn’t WE be?  The Cubs still have the best record in the National League.  We are still looking at a 4th straight playoff appearance in 4 years.  We are living in the golden era of Cubs baseball.  Get a grip folks.

Yeah, OK, I’m a little edgy; I’ve said that.  But at the end of the day, I still have supreme confidence in this team.  Definitely don’t want to take anything for granted; how many years have we seen where the season is long gone by now?  To be in the middle of it with 2 weeks to go… yeah, I’ll take that every single year from here on out.  I’m savoring this roller coaster ride.  It’s better than the one that goes down and never comes back up…

So we have to fly towards the hurricane in the middle of our streak of games to play a makeup game and then come back home the next day.  Hey, at least we got our game moved back on Friday; that was nice.  Again, nobody is going to feel sorry for us.  The MLB doesn’t owe us crap.  Well, except the fact that when the Cubs are good, the MLB $ are good; yeah, there’s that whole thing.  But nobody is going to throw us a bone.  This should be something that fortifies this team; us against the world type stuff.  Continuing to push on through the grind and come out the other side stronger… whether as the division winner or wild card spot.  We’re not missing the playoffs, ok?

It was kind of a rhetorical question… I can’t imagine that; still find it hard to believe that.  We are still in control of our own destiny.  We just need to win… every game from here on out.  Haha… no, the Brewers should lose again, but we do need to win most of the remaining games regardless of circumstances.  We can do it.  I believe that.  Go Cubs!
