It doesn’t get much better than this to open an NFL season. Playing the team we love to hate to begin the new regime is great… and scary at the same time. Facing this team that has owned us in recent memory, coming off a brutal year last year, starting a new one on the wrong end of a beatdown would be tough. Let’s hope the memory we have of this Packer matchup is a good one…
I have plenty of bad ones. I remember the ones from my youth… the Mark Lee takedown of Payton over the Gatorade table… the Charles Martin slam of Jim McMahon… the Don Majkowski across the line of scrimmage TD pass. Just a handful of ones that I can pull from the memory banks. I do have some good ones too. We did pretty much own the Packers for me growing up… The Fridge TD on Monday Night Football was against the cheese. The Fridge’s first TD reception was against Green Bay in Lambeau. Overall, it was a pretty good rivalry, meaning the Bears were on the right side for me as a kid… until a QB named Favre showed up.
Since then it’s been tough… Favre followed by Rodgers has left the Bears on the wrong end of this rivalry for many years. The Halloween beatdown in Soldier Field on Monday Night during the Sayers Butkus retirement game. The tough season ending defeats to Rodgers lately. Last year’s absolute destruction. And of course, the NFC Championship game where I learned to hate Cutler. Just thinking of the Packers make me sick…
I have to count on other teams lately to bring me joy, like Denver in the Super Bowl, the Giants in the NFC Championship game, and then Seattle last year. That brings a smile to my face.

Have I ever liked a Packer? After a couple seconds of thought, I can only think of one… Reggie White. I liked him a lot in Philly, and didn’t hate him when he went to Green Bay. Steve McMichael finished his career there, and I can’t hate him. Yeah, that’s about it.
It’s the oldest rivalry in football. The 191st edition of this will take place this Sunday. Overall, it’s been a good one, lately it’s been lopsided. I’m ready to turn this back around. I’m ready to stand up and fight these jerk offs.
I know I said I wasn’t too excited about the start of this season, but as Sunday rolls around… the juices will start to flow… the jersey will be on… and I will be pumped. For the start of the season of course, but for another chance to get a crack at the Pack. Packer thoughts… overall OK, recently bad, and overall hate. Bring them on!
