September 11, 2024: Hanging In There

posted in: Cubs | 0

The Cubs sit 4 games out of the final Wild Card spot in the NL with 17 games to go. Per ESPN, the probability that they can make the postseason is 2.3%. I’m sure that number is scientifically calculated, but it feels like that number should be a little better? The Cubs beat the Dodgers for the 2nd straight night in LA; they are hanging in there.

After arriving home from the whirlwind road trip that saw the Cubs go 8-1, the boys disappointed back in Wrigley, losing back to back series to the Pirates and Yankees respectively. I guess losing to the 1st place Yankees isn’t much of a shock; scoring 0 runs in the first 2 games of that series kind of sucked. Losing to the Pirates though? Come on… they’re tapped out. Heading out to play the 1st place Dodgers this week seemed like a daunting task, but… back on the road, and the Cubs all of a sudden are great again. They’ve scored 16 runs in the first 2 games, as they will be looking for the sweep tonight; that would be something. If they can pull it off, with 3 games in Colorado to follow, a 6-0 road trip wouldn’t be out of the question, and would certainly bump that playoff percentage up a bit.

I saw the Cubs were losing 3-1 last night; I started channel surfing. When I came back to the game, they were up 6-3… wow! Per the game summary, 3 Dodgers’ errors in the 8th helped the Cubs in their comeback bid. Then I saw the PCA catch to end the game; that was a beautiful thing. Had he not caught that ball, the Dodgers would have still needed one more run, but still… PCA made another one earlier in the game that was pretty sweet. His fielding has been impressive for the most part. I remember one earlier in the year he called off Nico and let the ball drop; I was there this past weekend when he let a Rizzo drive bounce off his glove. Not perfect, but this kid can cover a lot of ground out there, and will certainly make more plays than not, including some spectacular ones like the game ender on Tuesday night in LA. BTW, his hitting has been coming around too… Is the sky the limit for this kid that we acquired from the Mets for Baez? Definitely something to be excited about here looking ahead for the Cubbies.

Jordan Wicks will take on Bobby Miller tonight; I will try to make it to the end of the game for the 2nd straight night. I haven’t allowed myself to get too excited about this late season push by the boys, but I’m right there. Sweep the Dodgers, sweep the Rockies, and come back home for 7 against the A’s and Nationals… man, could this really happen? That would be a nice surprise. Go Cubs!
