September 10, 2023: Pathetic

Man… There are bad starts to the season, and then there are BAD starts to the season. I couldn’t even think of the best way to describe it, it was so bad… pathetic is more like it. I feel like I’m going to need to post a few things about this game to get it completely out of my system. It’s days like this, where my blog is most important… to me, personally. I need somewhere to let it all out. I guess that light at the end of the tunnel wasn’t quite bright enough yet, huh?

Where to begin? Well, let’s just say on the opening kickoff the Bears were penalized; I guess it could have been worse. We could have fumbled; the defense could have recovered and scored. We could have kicked off and the Packers could have taken it to the house. Still, a penalty on the first play of the new season is sort of ominous. It didn’t get much better then there on the first drive. On 3rd and short at midfield, the Bears decided to run a sneak… with their TE Cole Kmet; excuse me? Maybe if it worked we would have been like, oh yeah, cool… but why give the ball to a TE to run it? Stupid ass play call. Then we decided to go for it on 4th down at midfield, our side of midfield, on the first drive of the game; did we really need a make or break moment so early in the game? I like the aggressiveness, normally, and in this game, damn right I wanted to bury these guys, but… again, hindsight… We came up short, giving the Packers and their brand new QB a short field to work with. They promptly went 40 yards for the score, and like that, we were down 7-0. How you doing?

Certainly the game was not decided there, but man… as far as starts to the season go, that had to be up there among the worst. The Bears did come down on their next drive and get a FG; they did the same on the next drive. Actually, it wasn’t until the end of the half that the Packers scored again; this time it was a field goal. At the half, the Bears were losing 10-6. Not the start I envisioned, but certainly not the end of the world. I wasn’t feeling great, but I wasn’t in walk the ledge mode… at least not yet. I was… so so… which if I could have used that to sum up the Bears 2nd half, it would have been better than what actually happened.

Two straight GB touchdowns, both keyed on big plays in the passing game from Aaron Jones. A 51 yard play that put the Packers on the goal line, and a 35 yard pass on 4th down no less, that found pay dirt. At 24-6, things were looking pretty bleak. When Fields fumbled the Bears very next drive… thankfully GB got a penalty that pushed them back; the defense held, and the Bears got the ball back with no damage. The Bears marched right down the field and scored a TD w/the 2 pt conversion, making it a 10 point game. So you’re saying there’s a chance…

Nope. A busted play that ended up with a 37 yard completion to their TE who was open by about 20 yards setup the next Packer TD. Fields followed that up with his worst play of the day, throwing a ball he had no business throwing, right into the GB DBs hands, who shifted around, down the field, into the end zone. 38-14… game, set, match.

OK, that was the official game summary; it wasn’t pretty. My reaction will be next; it will be worse.
