September 1, 2021: Four Times a Charm?

posted in: Bears | 4

I think it’s safe to say the newness has worn off for the Nagy era in Chicago. The first year was beautiful, minus Parkey that is. The second year was a thud. Last year was weird, with the covid rules, the QB carousel, and the extended playoff appearance. All in all, because Trubisky didn’t turn out to be the guy, the Bears never made it over the hump; that wasn’t Nagy’s choice. Was it Nagy’s fault he didn’t prosper? I think we’ve been over that. 2 playoff appearances in 3 years isn’t too shabby though, right? Well, here we sit, at the start of Nagy’s 4th year as head coach; is four times a charm? Let’s run through the game by game Bears 2021 season preview.

  • Week 1 at LA Rams: 17-9 LOSS
    • The 4th season which should have started with so much excitement and anticipation begins with another typical Bears QB on another typical national TV appearance. Yes, Andy Dalton leads the Bears out of the tunnel, and proceeds to lead us nowhere near the end zone; surprised? The Bears D looks solid though, but old foe Matt Stafford does just enough to prove this first contest a waste. We’ve seen this movie too many times; somebody care to change the channel?

  • Week 2 vs Bengals: 31-24 WIN
    • It’s the Andy Dalton revenge game that we’ve all been waiting for; not! But hey, a win is a win, and you know what, Andy didn’t look nearly as bad as last week. The Bears light up the scoreboard, but they had to, as the young Bengals offense kept pace for most of the game before a game ending pick sealed the deal for DA Bears. What does it all mean?
  • Week 3 at Browns: 24-16 LOSS
    • Well that didn’t last long. Dalton has another subpar game; that’s 2 out of 3 for those keeping track. The defense held stout for the first half, but with little help from the offense except the kicks of Cairo, the Browns are able to get in the end zone, and get the win. How long was that Dalton leash?
  • Week 4 vs Lions: 17-16 LOSS
    • A perfect time to start Fields, at home against the Lions… except Nagy didn’t get the memo. Dalton leads the troops again to under 20 points on offense for the 3rd time out of 4 weeks. The prideful bunch that is the Detroit Lions relies on a defensive TD, and a last second field goal to rally to beat the Bears at home, as the home crowd threatens a riot after losing to the perennial punching bags.
  • Week 5 at Raiders: 27-24 WIN
    • In a move that potentially saves his job, as well as, the Bears season, Fields is finally brought in to start. What a time to be alive, as the Bears march out a quality NFL starting QB. He wasn’t perfect; he had a couple bad turnovers, but… he had some WOW plays, including a late scramble that setup the Bears game winning TD. It feels as if the momentum of the season has changed, just in time for…
  • Week 6 vs Packers: 19- 13 LOSS
    • … our matchup with the hated Cheese. Fields get his first taste of the rivalry, and takes a cheap shot late at the end of the first half with the Bears trailing 13-0. The Bears come out of the locker room inspired, but unfortunately, come up short in their quest for victory. A low scoring, sloppy, defensive battle sees the Packers on top, again, and the Bears looking at an uphill climb with a 2-4 record.
  • Week 7 at Bucs: 28-27 WIN
    • It doesn’t get any easier the following week on the road vs the Super Bowl champs, but… the Bears get it done. A huge game on the ground from Montgomery helps keeps the pressure off Fields, and helps get the Bears a much needed upset win. A famous meme is born as Brady is seen sucking his thumb on the sideline after being chased down by Khalil Mack the previous possession.
  • Week 8 vs 49ers: 21-10 WIN
    • Mark down a win for the defense. Multiple turnovers and sacks, coupled with great field position and a defensive TD, helps lead the Bears to a surprisingly easy victory over the Niners. The “other rookie QB” has problems with the Bears D all day, and Fields does just enough to not F it up, and the Bears are back at 500… WOO HOO!
  • Week 9 at Steelers: 42-35 WIN
    • Bears sitting at 500 head to Pittsburgh for a Monday night affair right before our bye week. Big Ben has a vintage performance, eluding pressure all game, making big throws, leading the Steelers up and down the field. Justin Fields has his coming out game. 3 TD passes, 2 rushing TDS, and a big time win. A star is born!!!

Let’s take this opportunity at the bye week to start making our Super Bowl plans. Justin Fields has arrived. The Bears are 4-1 since he took over, including 3 in a row. At 5-4 heading into the bye week, the future is bright… bring on the 2nd half!!! Bear Down!!!

I like the PMA here…that’s Positive Mental Attitude by the way. Not sure about the entire half-season scripted above, but hope looms eternal!!

Haha… let’s see what the line is, and more importantly, who is playing QB for each of us, but I’m down for something.
