October 9, 2022: The Light

Watching the Bears game always feels like an emotional rollercoaster; Sunday in Minnesota was no different. This game took us way down, then way up, then back to ground level with another Bears loss. To remember the immortal words of Dennis Green RIP, the Bears are who we thought they were…

I wanted to drive an ice pick right in my eye watching the first half. The defense might as well have fitted Kirk Cousins for his Hall of Fame jacket. 17 straight completions to start the game; wtf?!? The Vikings did whatever they wanted for most of the 1st half. I thought we were looking at a 49-3 final score. From Cousins to running the ball, the defense needed to try to stop something. And surprise, surprise… put a little pressure on little Kirky, and he ain’t that great is he? One other thing I noticed about “all-world” WR Justin Jefferson. He doesn’t miss any opportunity to run out of bounds, does he? Or how about that time when he just tried to bury his head in the ground surrounded by would-be tacklers? Dude’s weak, sorry. But speaking about running out of bounds… OK, we’ll get to that. After the dust settled from the torrid start, it was 21-3, then the Bears punched it in right before the half. The 21-10 deficit didn’t feel horrible, yet I still prepared for a nice 2nd half nap. That was the way down part…

It was way down because of how OUR offense looked as well. Talk about the road to nowhere… I can’t keep track of how many Sundays we’ve said that about the Bears offense. It’s just, I wanted to see something better; I wanted to see Fields take some steps this year. This is getting discouraging, then it happened. Then we finally saw what we’ve been waiting to see. We saw Justin make some big throws. We saw Justin make some big runs, including the biggest one which got nullified by a penalty from the ex-Vikings WR… hmmm… I instantly thought we had a rat in the organization, but then I saw the replay, and yeah, that was a weak ass penalty. Yet, midway through the 4th quarter the Bears actually lead this game 22-21; I was literally shocked… this was the way up part. Of course, the Vikings drove down and promptly, well, 7 minutes later, took the lead. The defense, which just as shockingly had been pitching a 2nd half shutout up until that point, couldn’t close the deal. Have no fear though; we get to see Justin Fields with the ball and chance to send this one to OT.

Would Fields and the Bears have finished off the drive? We’ll never know. We’ll never know because that ex-Vikings WR made another appearance; I had never heard of him before that earlier penalty… I hope I never have to hear his name again; I don’t even want to say his name. He caught the ball, which hey, is half the battle… memo to Pettis… but then unexplainably decided to make a move instead of running out of bounds, as the clock ticked down. Then, he doubled, shit tripled down on that stupidity, and let the DB rip the ball from his hands. Talk about a rough day in the office, or should I say “good day” for the ex-Vikings rat? That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. But between him and Pettis, the Bears “weapons” were on full display on Sunday. This was the “they are who we thought they were” part…

I hate every time the Bears lose, including this one, yet… this game provided a glimpse of what could be. The offense under Fields showed signs; maybe we can see the light at the end of the tunnel? Unfortunately, we will not come out of that tunnel this year; we’ll have to wait until next year at the very earliest… now I’m sounding like that Cubs fan I am. Yeah, the Bears showed fight; they stuck in it, and had a chance to win it at the end. Fields showed that he was an NFL QB, both with his arm and legs. And for us Bears fans, wandering around in the desert, those were the sips of water we needed; can’t wait to have the whole damn gallon… Bear Down!!!
