October 8, 2014: Then There Were Four

The baseball playoffs officially advanced to the next level last night with both National League series coming to an end.  I actually tried to watch some of the games, and I’ll tell you what… there was no shortage of drama.

In the first game of the night LA vs STL, the Dodgers brought back Kershaw on short rest.  He was strolling along, throwing a shutout through 6 innings, as the Dodgers held a 2-0 lead.  As I walked away in the bottom of the 7th, the Cardinals made their rally… against Kershaw.  The rally was topped off with a 3 run HR by Fatt Adams.  So the best pitcher in baseball by far during the regular season, took both losses in the postseason.  That’s got to hurt.  I guess nobody is invicible.  Not that I’m a fan of the Dodgers (I hate them remember), but I do like Kershaw, and I hate the Cardinals even more, so I was rooting for him.  Didn’t matter.  The Cardinals are moving on… again.  The Cardinals are the most consistent team in baseball nowadays (It hurts me to say that).  They are a team that is IN IT every single year.  You can never count them out.  They’re solid up and down, and bulid the majority of that team in house.  This is the model franchise.  I’m sure both Cubs and Sox fans would want their franchises to be as successful as them.  I still hate them.  I hate them because of how good they are.  I hate them because they are the Cardinals.  So I guess you can call me a hater.  You can call me a hater because I will continue to root against them.  So I guess now I’m a Giants fan.

They knocked off the Nationals last night, the National League team I was rooting for.  Here’s another team that has experienced a ton of success lately.  I really like their manager.  Bruce Bochy made the San Diego Padres competitive when they had nobody.  I knew putting him in the right situation would lead to success.  2 World Series titles later, and another NLCS appearance this year, he is the cream of the crop.  Oh, it helps to have great players like Kung Fu, Pence, and Posey.  The most interesting inning of the game involved all three of them.  With runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out, Pence walked to load the bases.  Kung Fu then stepped to the plate (I love how people dress up as pandas in the crowd).  A wild pitch was uncorked and the Giants scored the go ahead and eventually game winning run.  The wild pitch took the count to 3-1, so then they decided to walk Sandoval intentionally with the last ball.  The only problem was, the pitcher threw it over the catcher’s head.  Ramos sprang on that ball and threw to the pitcher who was covering home for a bang bang play at the plate.  Whenever there is a bang bang play at the plate, you have to think about the new rule MLB put in place this year, which I still don’t fully understand.  The pitcher was standing on the plate with his knee in front of the plate, in the path of the oncoming runner from 3rd base.  This runner was Buster Posey.  This rule was made because of the play where Buster Posey got hurt.  They called him out on the field, and after review, the play stood.  It’s just amazing the crazy plays that seem to always happen in the postseason.  The Giants held on and will meet the Cards in the NLCS.

Back to the ALCS, we have KC vs Baltimore.  I’ll be rooting for KC, and whoever wins this series, I will be rooting for in the World Series.  I got another reason to root for KC the other day, when the story about Hosmer treating on a $3,000 tab at a local bar after the clinching game.  How cool is that?  First, he sent out a message via twitter to invite people to the bar.  Then he proceeded to pickup a 3K tab, while him and his teammates had another 12K tab.  Damn, that’s a lot of champagne.  It’s good to have money.  It’s also good to give back when you do.  Taking care of these fans that have supported you all year is pretty damn cool, and just made me an Eric Hosmer fan, and gave me another reason to root the Royals on.  Go Kansas City!

Like I mentioned before, I’m finally able to watch the playoffs again.  I’m finally excited again about baseball’s postseason.  I’m excited because I can picture the Cubs in these games soon.  Is it next year?  Who knows… I’d like to think so.  I just know it will be soon.  The Sox may not be that far off too after I saw a story about them potentially grabbing Victor Martinez.  That would be a real good pickup; he carried my fantasy team this year.  Throw him and Abreu and Garcia in the middle of that lineup, and the offense is looking good, but that wasn’t the problem was it?  Only 6 months until Spring Training, but this playoff season is already making me anxious.  Until then, let’s sit back and see what drama develops next… and root for those Royals.
