October 7, 2016: The First One

posted in: Cubs | 1

I saw it when the MLB playoff schedule was released. I immediately looked at this weekend, and sure enough, games one and two of the NLDS would happen when I was out of town, in New York, for a wedding. I knew I’d figure something out.

Friday night would be the bigger challenge. That was the night of the ceremony and reception. When we got there, while my son and I were acting out some baseball plays, I was looking for a TV. There’s got to be one in here. Finally, I asked; the answer was no. Plan B kicked in, as we came back downstairs. I asked about Wifi in the building; 0 for 2. I could still use the Internet on my phone.  I’m still good. Oh wait, I can’t even get the Internet on my phone in here.  I would be missing game 1 of the NLDS.  Or would I?

I texted my brother and dad (thankfully those still worked). I told them my situation and that I would need constant texts. They came through like champs; so did the Cubs.

I saw absolutely nothing. The first highlight I saw was on the way home from the wedding; the Baez HR. My brother has sort of called it. I had lost track of all the play by play; I was pretty sure it was still 0-0, but didn’t know the inning. He confirmed, heading to the bottom of the 8th. He also said this is where we score. And, we, did.

Then, I got them. 14 of them, describing the Baez HR, a few happy expletives, the fact that Chapman was coming in, and the last one said Posey had hit a double and there were 2 outs. Then nothing…I checked again…nothing. Hanging here in the balance, with my phone out on the dance floor. Finally I texted, and????

Then the rest flowed in, and my night was perfectly topped.  Yes, I didn’t see it, but that was ok. It was an awesome time; and the Cubs won!  You know the first thing I thought: now I can’t watch any of the games. Haha.

The first one is in the bank, and that’s all that matters. My options will be a lot better tonight; we are still on vacation, but I do feel pretty confident that I will be firmly planted in front of a TV for this one.

About to hit the city; 9 hour countdown begins. Cubs hat, check. My son has his Cubs shirt, check. Game 2 is tonight.  Let’s take two!

What a game! So glad the Cubs came out with the W and a 1-0 series lead. Lester and cueto battled for 8 innings, and Baez took advantage of 1 mistake to crush a home run that barely made the basket. Chapman kept it interesting by going full with 2 guys and then giving up a double before locking it down. Game 2 brings Hendricks to the mound vs a familiar foe. Time to get those bats hot Cubs. Hold serve in Wrigley and get that second W!

    GO CUBS GO!!!
    10W!
