October 6, 2016: Giant Task

posted in: Cubs | 2

As I sat and watched Wednesday night’s wild card game, it was really clear who I wanted to face.  Initially, I wanted the Mets because I wanted to pay them back for last year.  As I watched the game, I wanted the Mets because they seemed like they would be the easier out.  Well, they’re out all right. The Giants took them out, and are the Cubs opponent in the 2016 NLDS.

We know about MadBum. We know about the World Series wins in the even years. Everybody knows those things.  We, specifically we, know about ex-Cub Angel Pagan and ex-Sox Connor Gilaspie (not double checking the spelling, sorry). Oh yeah, and what about that guy that played for both teams; we’ll most likely see him in Game 2.  The Giants aren’t sneaking up on anybody.  We know all about them. We know it will be a giant task to take them out.

This Giants team is one of the hottest after having a horrible second half. They blew the division and ending up having to fight for their playoff lives down the stretch. Their playoffs started a week ago, and they haven’t lost yet. Meanwhile, there’s the Cubs who clinched months ago it seems, playing out the string, waiting for their next meaningful game. It’s finally here.

I thought this was a disadvantage at first for the Cubs. Team comes in already rolling, with experience, with rings, into Wrigley to play our boys who have been kicking it for weeks.  I thought that until I heard a David Ross interview.

He talked about how long they’ve been waiting for this game. No, not the last couple days, nor the last couple weeks. No, it wasn’t since the all star break, or the start of the regular season, or even spring training for that matter. The Cubs have been thinking about this game since last year’s NLCS loss. Yeah, that long.

Since then, the Cubs have been the favorite to win the World Series.  They have lived up to every ounce of hype. Storming out of the gate to a historic start, steaming to first place and never looking back.  Ending up 45 games above 500!  Yes, our Cubs!  They’ve had the target all year, and they truly have embraced it. They are the best team in baseball. That is a fact that is proven by 162 games.  There is no question. But now what?

All I read and hear about is the randomness of the playoffs. I see how many teams with the best record in baseball go on to win the World Series.  I remember the postseason scars that I already have on my heart.  I wonder…is this really THE year?

This series is going five games folks. You didn’t think this was going to be easy did you?  I know you expected this to last past the first round. I think it will too.

I see a split in Wrigley in the first two, and that same split in San Fran.  I see Game 5 at Wrigley. I see the Cubs prevailing.  Well, of course I do.

This is no time to worry about any team. We are the best. Other teams should be worrying about us. That’s how it should be, but not so sure how a team that hasn’t won in our lifetime can be so confident.  I hope they are. I hope they can overcome it all; yes, all of it. There will be a lot of it.

I’ve been waiting for this moment too. I’ve been waiting just as long. I’ve been waiting longer. Friday night rolls around, I will be ready. I hope the Cubs are too. I know they are. Let’s Go Cubbies!!!

Bring it on giants! Who cares about your even year winning crap. I dont, and I am pretty sure the Cubs dont. It means NOTHING, just like the Cubs 103 wins. Time to prove it when it matters. Been waiting since last year’s nlcs sweep? Been waiting since 1945? Been waiting since 1908? Yeah, exactly. Everybody has been waiting. The time is now. This is the team. The Cubs are the best. Enough talk. Play ball. WIN!
