It was Cousins’ Day on Sunday, and 15 of us gathered to watch the Bears game Sunday. We actually did other things too, but the game was on the entire time. As the Bears game neared its end, my 3 year old nephew punched me in the nuts. Isn’t that appropriate?
Yeah, another game that there was no way in hell we should lose happened this Sunday in Carolina. As I wrote in my Bears preview on Friday, there were 3 things to avoid if we wanted to cash in on this easy win. The first one, was keep this game between the offensive and defensive units, and do not let special teams have an impact on the end result. That one didn’t last long. I’ve been watching football for about 30 years that I can remember, and I haven’t seen many plays like that. For the punt returner to get hit, fumble, then players pile on the ball while the punt returner gets up, grabs the ball, and runs for a TD, it didn’t bode well. It didn’t take long for the 2nd “key to losing the game” happened, and that was a Cutler pick deep in the Carolina zone. Before the half ended, our ex-Bear Greg Olsen scored the first of his two TDs on the day, and the trifecta was complete, yet we still led 21-14.
The 2nd half brought one Bears FG. That’s right, it’s not a misprint. All the Bears could muster in the 2nd half was 3 points. Throw in another key Cutler pick, a Forte fumble, and a game winning TD to, you got it, Greg Olsen, and the Bears found a way to lose this one. I’m not sure which game hurt more… week 1 vs Buffalo at home, or this one, against a Carolina team we should have killed.
What is it about this team that shows signs of brilliance, yet can’t deliver on the goods? For example, Forte had a monster game, yet fumbled to set up the Carolina winning drive. Cutler had some nice passes, and a nice TD run, yet threw 2 costly INTs; one in the red zone and one late in the game. The defense made some nice plays too, like the 2 forced fumbles and the batted pass INT, yet couldn’t cover the one guy that could beat us today. Hell, even one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history missed a FG in this one. What the heck is the problem?
You know it’s easier to lose when you suck. It’s easier to accept the fact that it’s going to be a tough season, and NOT expect much, and get happy for any victory you may stumble upon. It’s another thing to lose games like this when you’re expected to win. It’s another thing to go into the season with high hopes, and have a game like this happen. Again, we see flashes of brilliance, but there is no delivery on the end result. The Bears should be sitting at 4-1 right now. Instead, with a 2-3 record, heading into a tough road game at Atlanta, the Bears face a critical juncture of the season.

I hate when old players come back and haunt you. I knew Greg Olsen had to be covered in this one, for the pure fact that we shouldn’t let an ex-Bear come back and beat us. We let it happen. Next up, is Devin Hester, now playing for the Falcons, followed by Lovie Smith who coaches the Tampa Bay Bucs. These ex-Bears could essentially sink our season. With Greg Olsen doing the deed in this one, Devin gets his shot next week. Any bets on a Hester return TD next week?
Screw it, they’re gone and there’s nothing we can do about it. We have enough to win these games. We have a damn good team out there, and that’s why it’s so frustrating. I’ve already harped on Cutler enough last week; he didn’t do anything to help his cause in this one. It’s the same old story with Cutler, and the same old story with these Bears. Great expectations, but…
Again, it’s time to put another tough loss behind us. Why do I have the feeling that we will look back on this one, just like with week 1 vs Buffalo, and have some regrets? All we can do is move on. All we can do is keep the faith.
This loss was like the surprise punch in the nuts delivered by my nephew today. It’s both surprising and painful at the same time. What is it going to take to get these wins? What is it going to take to get this ship going in the right direction? It’s not sinking yet, as there’s plenty of football to play, but let me tell you, it’s starting to feel sort of like our baseball season this year, when we couldn’t wait for the Bears to swoop in and provide us some joy. The Bulls and the Blackhawks are on deck… I hope we don’t need them for a while. Let’s get this thing together. Let’s deliver on some expectations for once. Let’s get back on track…now!

Yeah, what happened to the offense with ‘ all those weapons’? I understand leaning on Forte, he’s a horse and can carry the load. But what about that downfield threat that the Bears possess? The game plan seemed to be hand it or throw it to Forte!! There were very few tosses to the receivers down the field! I blame this loss once again on the game plan. I think there were only 2 or 3 times Newton was touched, and poor use of the offensive weapons on the field. Guess I won’t need to worry too much in 2 weeks. All I need to do is rush Cutler, and let Forte have a big day. He can’t beat us by himself.

Defense did more than expected in my book. Game was on the line and the OLD Cutler, showed up. 16 Million a year and the whole offense, geared for his liking…if we had a Manning he would have had 600 years in the air and 7 Tds in one game. TRADE CUTLER!!!
