October 5, 2018: The Return of Hockey

Thursday night brought us Chicago Blackhawks fans the return of hockey.  It was a visit to Ottawa for the season opener; puck, dropped.

I tried to make time to watch it.  It’s not like Opening Day in baseball, or the 1st NFL game of the year, but it’s still fun, especially considering the circumstances this year.  Cubs just bowed out too early, Bears are on a bye week, and the Hawks are returning after not making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.  We were ready.  Ready for what, not sure.

Most experts are picking the Hawks to miss the playoffs again.  Is the window all the way shut?  They think so.  Other teams have gotten younger and faster and better, and the Hawks are left trying to keep up.  Unfortunately, this sounds about right.  Although, I’m not ready to completely buy in.  This year will tell us for sure if this is the case.

This first game of the season didn’t change anything.  We saw a nice flash from one of our young stars to start the scoring, as DeBrincat scored a beauty.  We also saw a very active Captain, who scored on his second semi-breakaway as he fired one off the goalie into the net.  Those were a couple of the notable positives in the first period.  The negatives were familiar.  Cam Ward is not Corey Crawford.  He gave up 3 goals in the first period.  But, it wasn’t all his fault.  The defense looked like the defense.  Turning the puck over in our own zone, allowing guys to just skate right up on Cam.  It could have been worse.  They had a semi 2 on 0 where Cam stoned them.  He made a nice play on a breakaway too.  But, it was 3-2 after the first period.  Not feeling really good, especially since the Senators are far from the competition that we will see more regularly this year.

Didn’t see the 2nd period, but I did see the 3rd, where Seabrook pulled the same move the Ottawa defensemen did in the first period.  He slid down and Kane hit him on the tape as he blasted one home; tie game!  After that goal, the Hawks seemed content to go to OT, and grab at least one point in this opener.  It did, and they did.  Who would get the extra one?

Our best player came through with a beautiful top shelf backhand on a semi breakaway in close quarters to win the game.  Unbelievable what Patrick could do with the puck.  The Hawks got their first 2 points of the year; they are undefeated baby!

It’s the first game of the season.  I didn’t expect to see a well oiled machine.  It was nice to get the win; I feel like it will be a struggle every game.  We’ll have to claw and scratch our way for every point we get.  The days where the Hawks are dominating are gone.  It doesn’t mean we still can’t be a playoff team.  And when you get there, anything can happen.

Good to see the Hawks back either way.  Hockey is back, the Blackhawks are back.  Nothing wrong with that.  Go Hawks!

The Blackhawks returning is a good thing, especially since the Cubs were eliminated. Normally, I would have rather waited a few weeks to get up to speed with the Hawks, but they are a welcome addition to get the mind off of the disappointing finish to the Cubs season. I did not see this game, but I know that the Hawks are damn good when both Toews and Kane score in the same game. Both of them scoring in game 1 is a good sign as they need to lead the way. Yes, the core is aging but with some young talent sprinkled in and a healthy Crow hopefully close to returning, the Hawks should be able to make it back to the playoffs and make some noise. Welcome back hockey and welcome back Hawks! Way to start the year with a W…hoping you can end it the same way about 8 months from now! GO HAWKS!!!
