October 30, 2014: Remember This

posted in: Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 1

What a day it was.  It wasn’t enough to get ready to watch Game 7 of the World Series.  It wasn’t enough to get hyped up for the Bulls season opener.  Why not just throw the potential new manager for the Cubs on top of that?  Yep, it was a day to remember.

The remote control commando was in full effect.  My finger was on that last button, rotating between the World Series and the Bulls.  Normally, the Bulls would get more love.  In this scenario, it was about even.  It was about even until my son asked me to play with him in his room… how can I say no to that?  Hell, 10 years from now, I may never hear that again.  So back and forth we went, to his room, to the TV, from the Bulls to the Series, and for kicks, why not throw in a little potty training.  I’m fricking beat.  The results were mixed.

Although potty training failed tonight, the Bulls certainly did not disappoint.  To say they met every expectation in game 1 of an 82 game season may be overreacting, but man, they looked good.  Yeah, it was the Knicks, and boy do they still suck.  How’s JR Smith fitting into that triangle Phil?  Is part of that triangle offense chucking up horrible outside shots?  Do they have a triangle defense?  Just think Melo, as you sit on the bench watching your team, your future, your ass handed to you, what might have been?  Money can’t buy you rings man.  Enjoy the next 5 years of sucking.

Meanwhile, check that stat sheet for the Bulls.  Taj and Pau leading scorers.  DRose and Noah both played less than 21 minutes.  Everybody on the bench played except Nazr.  The Bulls depth was on full display.  Taj was the most impressive, but that’s not surprising.  I was also impressed with Brooks and Dougie, 2 real decent debuts in a Bulls uni.  Oh yeah, and Drose didn’t get hurt.  1 down, the rest of the season to go.  Think the UC will be ready for the home opener on Friday night vs the Cavs?  I know I will.

Game 7 lived up to expectations, but the result was not as I would have liked.  Madison Bumgarner won his 3rd game of this World Series; that’s legendary stuff.  Kung Fu Panda had the most hits EVER in a postseason; ditto.  This Giants team deserves the title of dynasty with 3 in 5 years.  Meanwhile, the Royals did everything they could, they just couldn’t get to Bumgarner.  With 2 outs in the 9th, I thought we may see a miracle.  When Blanco misplayed that ball in CF, I thought we may see a game tying inside the park HR.  I couldn’t believe how slow Alex Gordon was getting around those bases, looking over his shoulder from 2nd to 3rd.  It was like he was Billy Butler out there; at least he made it home on the Gordon double earlier in the game.  Gordon ended up watching from 3rd base as Madison got Perez to pop up, to who else.  Pablo secured the pop up with 2 hands in foul territory and the celebration ensued.

Disappointment has to be setting in for Kansas City and their fans.  To see another team celebrate on your field has to suck.  I was disappointed too; my wife even said “sorry babe”.  I told her not to be sorry; this is nothing.  Yeah, I was rooting for them, but I’ve already forgotten about it.  If that was the Cubs on the losing side of that, I would not be consolable.

Speaking of the Cubs… Joe Maddon.  I’m excited.  Yeah, like everything, every plan, everybody that comes to Wrigley, there’s no guarantee, but just as I remember that day Theo decided to come here 3 years ago, I’ll remember this day too.  Yeah, it’s not official, but it will be.  After enduring these last 3 years, you see the plan coming together.  Adding a well-respected, experienced, consistent winning manager to the mix, is a good thing.  Yeah, I know he doesn’t have any rings, but to compete like he did with the Rays and that payroll in the AL East against NY and Boston, definitely says something.  To know that he wanted this job… he wanted to come here… he wants to be the one at the helm for that day…  that’s how it should be.  I’ll save the official welcome for when it happens, but I’m very excited about this recent development.

As we say goodbye to baseball for another year, we welcome back the Bulls.  With the depth on full display in Game 1 of 82, let’s hope we can stay healthy and keep getting better every game.  I know I think title for every Chicago team every year, but I don’t think that’s farfetched for this Bulls team.  I’m ready for another title; it’s been too long.  It’s been 17 years.

17 years too long?  HA!  There is another drought that’s on my mind.  There is another team that I can’t wait to see on the field next year.  To actually watch most of the postseason this year was fun.  To be back in the postseason will be even better.  Will that day be next year?  You know what they say…
