Who haven’t we talked about in a while? Been down on my Cubs all year, watching Da Bears start off 500, have previewed the Bulls season… what about the Blackhawks? Out of all of my teams, if there was anybody sitting at the bottom looking up, it’s them. Good news: tickets should be reasonable.
I pulled up the over under point total for the NHL season. The totals range from 110.5 to 66.5; you tell me where the Hawks sit. Yep, dead last. If it makes you feel any better, we do have company at that 66.5 over/under point total; hello Arizona Coyotes. Well, this is what happens when you trade away your best players; they must be following the Cubs playbook. Honestly, I think it may actually be dumber what the Hawks did.
I get the whole thing, with the new guys, wanting to build it from the ground up, with THEIR guys. Hopefully this will pay dividends in 3-5 years. But… didn’t the Hawks have some pieces in place already? If we wanted to get younger, yet we traded away Hagel, 24 years old, Dach, 21 years old, and DeBrincat 24 years old… not following. Oh… so we’re going to fill our roster with teenagers? I guess I would have understood if these guys were 30 and over, like the 2 legends still sitting on this absolutely demolished roster. Kane at 33 and Toews at 34 will need a roster list to know all their new teammates. At least the new guys didn’t dump them… yet. I imagine as the year goes on, and the Hawks do shit, maybe they’ll have an itch to join a contender… try to give themselves one more shot at a Cup before their playing days are over; I guess I wouldn’t be mad at them… either the dynamic duo for feeling that way, or the Hawks for honoring their wishes. Imagining they’ll both be immortalized with statues in front of, or inside the UC at some point.
Take a look at the Hawks roster… go ahead. I don’t claim to follow the Hawks as close as others, but man… struggling to figure out who these guys are. Shit, Andrew Shaw is still on the roster? No… he retired; update your stuff ESPN, unless he’s still on there because we’re still paying him this year? Some of the defensive guys I know. The Jones brothers, Murphy… I got nothing on the goalies. Maybe I recognize 4-5 names from the centers and wings, outside of 88 and 19. Sheesh… I need to do some catch up research to be ready for the start of the season.
That start will happen on October 12th… in Colorado; yes, they are that team with the highest over under win total at 110.5. How bad will that first game be? How bad will this season be? We’ll need to give the new guys a chance, I guess, but based on their initial moves, we’re taking another step backwards, even if we weren’t very far down the path to begin with. Settle in folks… going to be a long haul. Go Hawks!
