October 3, 2016: Demons

What do you think of when you think of Cubs playoff baseball?  It’s not good, unless you hate the Cubs.  And if you do hate the Cubs, then get a damn life.

It’s finally here.  The playoffs.  The longest regular season is over.  The Cubs have proven themselves to be the best regular season team this year.  With a 103-58-1 record, they were 8.5 games clear of the next best record in the league.  It wasn’t even that close.  The Cubs were the best team; now, it means shit.

Well, it does equal home field advantage; that should prove to be an advantage, especially at Wrigley.  Well, again, how many good playoff memories do we have at Wrigley?  I think of Game 1 in 1984 watching from my first grade classroom as the Cubs pasted the Padres.  I think of last year.. the NLDS clincher against the Cards.  There were good memories in Wrigley… not many… but they are there.  We’re looking to build on that.

One team that people were afraid of has been eliminated, and that’s the Red Birds.  It’s amazing they were even in it until the very end, considering their team really sucked ass this year.  That is a testament to the organization unfortunately; you can never count them out.  But after 162 was played, they are officially out.  So all you Cub fans who were worried about meeting the Cardinals, you can move on to worrying about something else.  I wasn’t really worried.

I mean, we shouldn’t be worried about one specific team… we could worry about every team.  We now know that it will either be the Giants or the Mets; some good postseason memories there.  1989 or 2015, pick your poison.  But this isn’t any of those years… it’s 2016 last I checked.  And it’s our time.

Still, you’re not a die hard if the demons are not lurking in your brain somewhere.  We’re trained that way… we’ve been forced to be that way with all the past postseason failures.  We worry… about everything.  No matter how good the Cubs look, we know… we know not to count on anything until it actually happens.  We’re still waiting.

Kesar has got get free viagra stimulating and rejuvenating properties. But the wait may really be over this year; see that’s the other side of a die hard.  The ultimate optimist… it’s a double edge sword this life we live.  One side thinking the best, and the other, waiting for the next shoe to drop.  There is no single team in the baseball postseason that worries me; that is a fact.  The only team that will beat the Cubs is the Cubs.  I said it before, and I’ll say it again.  I do believe that.

If the Cubs play their A game, then we should be celebrating in about a month from now.  If they don’t, well… let’s not think about that right now.

So I read an article about how the best regular season teams have done in the baseball postseason.  I shouldn’t have read that.  Only 3 teams in the past 25 years have won the World Series after being the best regular season team.  Those odds aren’t that great.  The last NL team to do it; 30 years ago… do the math, yes it’s 1986, yes you should know who won that year…. yes, we could be playing them in the NLDS this year.  It’s a pretty shocking statistic.  It really ties in well with that earlier statement above… the regular season means shit right now.

Screw all that.  Screw it all I say.  Forget about all the past failures.  Forget about the statistics.  I’m not going to worry about any of that crap… I’m going to really try.  It’s not easy.

Monday morning will come, and I will be wearing my Cubs hat.  I will be wearing something of the Cubs every day until they’re not playing any longer.  I have a lot of Cubs gear, but I’m still hoping to have to wash before it’s all said and done.

It’s finally here.  Sit back, and relax for the last time these next 4 days.  Game 1 NLDS is October 7th in Wrigley.  Let the games begin.  Go Cubs!
