Did I tell you I coach my son’s basketball team? Yeah, so we rolled right into basketball after the baseball season ended. I enjoyed coaching so much, I signed up to do it all over again; this time on the hardwood.
I didn’t get a chance to pick the team’s name. Of course, I would have picked the Bulls, but when he told me the team selection was by seniority, I knew this first timer wasn’t getting the home team. I knew the team I wanted as my second choice; I don’t think I told him that. But when the teams and scheduled were published, it was official; we were the Timberwolves.
The jerseys aren’t quite as nice as baseball. Essentially, it’s just a black t-shirt with the park name on the front and numbers on the back. No team name; the “jersey” doesn’t look anything like the team jerseys, except for the color I guess. So it was off and running; let’s see how these 4, 5, and 6 year olds do on the court.
They lower the baskets to 8 feet; I can dunk on it! They also play with the smaller basketballs. My son had a rough time making a shot. Not necessarily having the strength yet, I tried to give him pointers. Then, one practice, he made a bunch of shots; he was so happy… so was I. He hasn’t made any during the games yet, but he’s on his way. Most of our players haven’t made a shot during the games yet; yes, it’s been one defensive struggle after the next if you may.

Today’s game was a barnburner; a 4-0 loss. My team actually played decently in this one. There have been games that were uglier. I think one was 22-2; another 16-0. Each team in the league has a kid that is really good; some have a couple. Some of these kids are launching shots from just inside the free throw line. One of the teams has this kid that’s about a foot taller than anybody else; I thought he was going to dunk it coming down the court the one time. I call him Baby Shaq. Yes, our team doesn’t have anybody like this; we have one kid who can actually make shots in the game, but even he is just OK.
And that’s OK. It’s all about the fun, although I can tell my timber pups get frustrated out there. I guess the “fun” of running back and forth down the court wears off when you can’t make one basket. My son feels it too. He doesn’t like when he can’t do something, or when he loses at something; I wonder where he gets that from. But, I keep telling him he has skills; I’m not lying.
He’s the best dribbler on our team, hands down. He’s always looking to pass first, which isn’t necessarily a bad quality. Just recently, he’s learned to rebound. For most of the season, most of the team just stands there looking at the ball bounce around; where are these kids that would tackle each other going after a baseball? He’s finally catching on; he’s not tackling anybody, but he’s making an effort to go get that ball. The only thing that he can’t do well is make a basket. He came so close one game… All I keep telling him, and everybody else, is don’t be afraid to take the shot; one will eventually go in.
Until then, we get our exercise in. The standings say everybody is tied for first, but in the PF (points for) column, we are last… by a long shot, and we even had kids from the other team make it in our basket on 2 different occasions. Maybe we’re a year away… at least we’re a lot closer than our Chicago Bulls…

Sounds like you got the short end of the talent stick in basketball. Can’t wait to hear when the first basket is made in a game…it’s coming! Goodluck tpups!
